Wati vs Gupshup: which WhatsApp API provider fits a growing brand?
Gupshup is one of the largest messaging platforms in India and sells WhatsApp both as a cheap self-serve API and as an enterprise suite. Wati sells a ready-made WhatsApp inbox on monthly plans. This guide is for marketing and operations leads at growing brands who need to know which model costs less at their volume and what each one leaves for them to do.
Quick answer
Gupshup's self-serve WhatsApp API costs $0.001 per message, incoming and outgoing, with Meta's fees billed at actual cost, but it is an API: a developer builds the inbox and logic, and AI agents and enterprise features go through sales. Wati is a finished inbox with broadcasts and chatbots from $69 a month, with messages billed from its rate card. Gupshup wins on cost at scale; Wati wins on speed and simplicity.
Who is each one for?
Gupshup describes itself as a conversational AI platform for marketing, commerce and support. It sells WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS and RCS messaging, voice agents and AI agents, and says it serves more than 50,000 customers and handles over 120 billion messages a year; those are Gupshup's own figures. Small teams meet it through the self-serve WhatsApp API; large brands meet it through its sales team.
Wati is a WhatsApp Business API platform for small and mid-sized teams: a shared inbox, broadcasts, a no-code chatbot builder, ecommerce tools, integrations and an optional AI agent, Astra. You sign up, connect a number with Wati's help and start in days.
Both are official providers on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, so the number, templates and Meta's message fees work the same way on each. If the provider system is new to you, our BSP explainer sets it out.
How do their cost models differ?
Gupshup charges per message with no plan; Wati charges a plan with no per-message platform fee. Both add Meta's charges on top.
| Cost line | Gupshup self-serve | Wati |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan | None | Growth $69 ($59 yearly); Pro $149 ($119 yearly); Business by quote |
| Platform fee per template message | $0.001 | None |
| Platform fee per session message | $0.001, outgoing and incoming | None |
| Media above 64KB | Free | Not charged separately |
| Voice calls | $0.0001 per second | WhatsApp Business Calling in the inbox; check usage pricing |
| Meta's message fees | Billed at actuals | Billed from Wati's rate card |
| Users | Not a self-serve concept; you build the interface | 3 on Growth, 5 on Pro, then $39 each |
Gupshup figures are from its self-serve WhatsApp API pricing page and Wati's from its pricing page, both in October 2026. Gupshup's page also notes Meta's 1 October 2026 change: service messages are now charged after the first 1,000 a month, which are free of WhatsApp fees. Our Gupshup pricing guide has more detail on its rates.
At what volume does Gupshup's fee overtake Wati's plan?
Only at very high volume. Gupshup's platform fee reaches the price of Wati Pro ($149) at 149,000 messages a month, counting both directions. Below that, Gupshup's platform cost is lower than any Wati plan.
| Messages a month, in and out | Gupshup platform fee | Wati Growth | Wati Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | $5 | $69 | $149 |
| 25,000 | $25 | $69 | $149 |
| 69,000 | $69 | $69 | $149 |
| 149,000 | $149 | Growth caps broadcasts at 15,000 a month | $149 |
| 300,000 | $300 | Not suitable | $149 |
That table compares platform cost only, which flatters Gupshup in one way and Wati in another. It flatters Gupshup because Wati's price includes the inbox, chatbot builder and support; on Gupshup self-serve you pay for building those. It flatters Wati because Wati's rate card can carry a margin over Meta's fees, while Gupshup bills Meta's fees at actuals. At high marketing volume, that margin can outweigh the plan price.
What does a 50,000-message campaign month cost?
A hypothetical skincare brand in Bengaluru sends 50,000 marketing messages a month to opted-in customers in India, receives 8,000 messages and sends 8,000 service replies (7,000 billable after Meta's free 1,000). Meta's India rates from its US dollar rate card: $0.0118 per marketing message, $0.0014 per service message.
| Line | Gupshup self-serve | Wati Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | None | $149 |
| Platform fees | 66,000 × $0.001 = $66 | None |
| Meta, 50,000 marketing | $590.00 | At least $590.00 |
| Meta, 7,000 service | $9.80 | At least $9.80 |
| Total | $665.80 | At least $748.80, plus any rate card margin |
Gupshup is cheaper by at least $83 a month in cash, and by more if Wati's rate card sits above Meta's list. For context, Indian rate cards from other providers we checked this month carry margins of roughly 10% to 26% on marketing messages, which on 50,000 messages would be another $60 to $150. Against that, someone has to build and run the campaign tooling on Gupshup self-serve, or the brand moves to Gupshup's enterprise offer, whose price is set through sales. Our guide to WhatsApp broadcast limits covers the sending rules for campaigns at this size.
What does your team actually get on each?
On Gupshup self-serve
- The official API with a low, published per-message fee.
- Meta's fees at cost, with no markup on the WhatsApp fee.
- Voice calling priced per second.
- A route to enterprise features, AI agents, SMS and RCS through sales.
- The work of building the inbox, flows and reporting, unless you buy the enterprise suite.
On Wati
- A shared inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and a web widget.
- Broadcasts, retargeting and click tracking in a dashboard.
- A no-code chatbot builder and automation triggers.
- Shopify, HubSpot and other integrations by plan.
- Astra AI agents from $99 a month, priced on its own page.
Template approval works the same on both, because Meta approves templates, not the provider. Our guide to getting templates approved applies to either.
Questions to ask both sales teams
- What is your rate for a marketing message and a utility message to my main country, and how does it compare with Meta's list rate?
- Are incoming customer messages charged? (On Gupshup self-serve, yes, at $0.001.)
- What does the AI agent cost, how is usage counted, and what happens when the allowance runs out?
- How fast can a campaign send, and is there an extra charge for higher speed? Wati lists 4,000 messages a minute on Business and a 12,000 a minute add-on.
- Who builds and maintains the chatbot flows, and is onboarding included or paid?
- What does it take to move my number to another provider if I leave?

For small businesses that only answer enquiries
Neither Gupshup nor Wati is aimed at a single clinic or tutor who just needs WhatsApp answered. We make ReplyKit for that case, so weigh our view accordingly: an AI agent that answers WhatsApp and website chats from your own content and books appointments, from $29 a month with replies included and no Meta fees. It connects by QR code as a linked device, which is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta, so a number can be restricted; we recommend a dedicated number. It cannot send campaigns, SMS or RCS. If that fits, compare the plans or try it free for 7 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gupshup cheaper than Wati?
On cash cost, usually yes. Gupshup's self-serve API has no plan fee and charges $0.001 per message plus Meta's fees at actual cost, while Wati starts at $69 a month and bills messages from its own rate card. The catch is that Gupshup self-serve is an API, so you build the inbox and automation yourself.
Does Gupshup charge for incoming WhatsApp messages?
Yes, on its self-serve plan. Gupshup's $0.001 fee applies to session messages in both directions, so a customer's message to you costs $0.001 as well as your reply. Meta itself does not charge for incoming messages.
Does Gupshup have an inbox like Wati?
Not on the self-serve WhatsApp API plan, which is priced for developers. Gupshup sells broader products, including AI agents, through its sales team. Wati's plans include a shared team inbox from the start.
Is Gupshup only for big companies?
No, anyone can use the self-serve API, and its per-message fee suits low volumes. In practice it suits businesses with a developer; non-technical small teams usually find a dashboard tool such as Wati easier.
Do Wati and Gupshup both charge Meta's fees?
Yes. Both are official WhatsApp Business API providers. Gupshup bills Meta's fees at actuals; Wati bills from its rate card. Since 1 October 2026 that includes service replies after the first 1,000 per number each month.
Which is better for WhatsApp marketing campaigns in India?
At high volume, Gupshup is usually cheaper because of its small platform fee and at-cost Meta charges. At small and medium volume, Wati is easier, because campaigns, segments and tracking work from a dashboard without a developer.
