Quick answer

Gupshup's self-serve WhatsApp API costs US$0.001 per message plus Meta's fees, but you need a developer. For a ready-made inbox in India, AiSensy (from ₹1,500 a month), Gallabox, DoubleTick or Interakt are the usual alternatives. For a developer API elsewhere, Twilio or 360dialog. For AI replies and booking without Meta fees, ReplyKit from US$29.

What is Gupshup, and why do people look for alternatives?

Gupshup is a large conversational messaging company. It says it serves more than 50,000 customers in over 130 countries. For WhatsApp it offers two very different things: an enterprise platform sold through its sales team, and a self-serve API priced per message.

That split is why small businesses go looking elsewhere. The enterprise route usually means demos and custom quotes. The self-serve route is cheap per message, but it is an API: it sends and receives messages, and a developer has to build the inbox, bots and reporting around it. Owners who just want their team answering WhatsApp from a dashboard tend to want something in between.

Gupshup's strengths are real: scale, a long track record in India, and very low per-message platform fees. If you have engineers and high volume, it is a sensible choice.

How much does Gupshup cost?

On its self-serve plan, Gupshup charges a flat US$0.001 per message, for templates and for session messages in both directions, and passes WhatsApp's fees through at actual cost. Enterprise pricing is by quote.

From Gupshup's self-serve pricing page, checked October 2026. The page also notes that Meta charges for service messages from 1 October 2026, with the first 1,000 a month free of WhatsApp fees. Meta sets those rules on its pricing page.

Every tool except ReplyKit runs on the official WhatsApp Business API and passes on Meta's message charges. Indian prices are usually shown before 18% GST.

What would the same month cost on each tool?

Here is one realistic month for an Indian business, priced on Gupshup and three ready-made alternatives. The Meta part is the same everywhere on the API; the platform part is what changes.

Say a skincare brand in Pune sends 3,000 marketing messages to opted-in customers, receives 6,000 messages and sends 4,000 service replies inside the 24-hour window, on one number. Meta's India rates, as AiSensy lists them for 1 October 2026, are ₹1.09 per marketing message and ₹0.145 per service message after 1,000 free a month.

Platform prices before GST, from each vendor's page in October 2026; check whether your provider adds a markup to Meta's rates. The pattern is clear. Gupshup's platform fee is tiny, but you pay for it in build time. The ready-made tools charge ₹1,500 to ₹4,500 a month for an inbox your team can use today. The AI is extra on most of them.

Why we did not put ReplyKit in this table. It cannot send the 3,000 marketing messages. ReplyKit only replies to people who message you; it does not broadcast. For the 6,000 incoming messages and the replies, it would be a flat US$29 to US$49 a month with no Meta fees, which is a different job.

Which Gupshup alternative is best in India?

For campaigns on a budget, AiSensy. For an online store, Interakt. For lead handling with AI built in, Gallabox. For a sales team with many agents on one number, DoubleTick.

What about Gupshup alternatives outside India?

If you have a developer, Twilio and 360dialog are the closest swaps. If you do not, Respond.io is the common choice for multichannel teams.

Twilio charges US$0.005 per message, five times Gupshup's self-serve fee, but has wide documentation and global reach. 360dialog charges per number instead, from €49 a month, which suits high volume on few numbers. Both pass Meta's fees through. Respond.io Starter is US$79 a month billed yearly with no developer needed, and AI Agents start on Growth at US$159. See Twilio WhatsApp alternatives for the API side in detail.

Where ReplyKit fits, and the job it cannot do

We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. ReplyKit fits a business whose WhatsApp is mostly inbound: people asking prices, availability and how to book. It does not fit a business whose WhatsApp is mostly campaigns.

The AI answers from your own website, PDFs and price lists, replies in the customer's language (over 30 are supported), understands voice notes and photos. It qualifies leads, books appointments into real open slots with double-booking protection, and hands over to you in one click. Plans are US$29, US$49 or US$99 a month with AI replies included. See what each plan includes.

It connects through Quick Connect, a QR scan that links your number in about two minutes. That is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta, a number can be restricted, and we recommend a dedicated number. In exchange there are no Meta fees and no template approvals.

When ReplyKit is the wrong choice. Broadcasts, campaigns, OTPs, order notifications, the green tick, or very high volume all need the official API. Keep Gupshup or one of the tools above for those. Some brands run both: campaigns from an API number, enquiries answered by ReplyKit on another. Our API vs QR pairing guide explains the trade-off.

Five questions to ask in any Gupshup alternative demo

Demos show the best case. These questions show the bill and the limits.

  1. Do you add a markup to Meta's message rates? Ask for the per-message price in rupees, for marketing, utility and service.
  2. How many users are included, and what does the next one cost? Some plans have hard caps.
  3. Is the AI agent included, an add-on, or on a higher plan? And what happens when its credits run out?
  4. What is the shortest billing period? Quarterly or yearly-only billing changes the first invoice.
  5. Is there a free trial, and does it need a card? Some vendors only offer demos.

For the answering side, you can skip the demo: the ReplyKit trial runs for 7 days with 300 AI replies and no card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Gupshup?

For a ready-made WhatsApp inbox in India, AiSensy, Gallabox, DoubleTick or Interakt. For a developer API, Twilio or 360dialog. For AI replies and booking without Meta fees, ReplyKit, which does not send broadcasts.

How much does Gupshup charge per message?

Gupshup's self-serve plan lists US$0.001 per message for templates and for incoming and outgoing session messages, with WhatsApp's own fees billed at actual cost. Enterprise pricing is by quote.

Is Gupshup free?

No. The self-serve API charges per message and Meta's fees apply. There is no free plan on its pricing page. AiSensy is the best-known free option on the official API, with Meta charges still applying.

Is AiSensy better than Gupshup?

For a small business without a developer, usually yes, because AiSensy gives you a ready-made inbox and broadcast tools from ₹1,500 a month. For developers who want a raw API at a very low per-message fee, Gupshup is cheaper.

Does Gupshup have an AI chatbot?

Gupshup markets itself as a conversational AI platform with enterprise AI offerings, sold through its sales team. On the self-serve API you would build or connect your own AI.

Can ReplyKit send WhatsApp broadcasts like Gupshup?

No. ReplyKit only replies to people who message you. It has no broadcasts, bulk sends or campaigns, so keep an official API tool for those.

How we know this. We read Gupshup's self-serve pricing page in October 2026 and the pricing pages of AiSensy, Interakt, Gallabox, DoubleTick, Respond.io, Twilio and 360dialog, including DoubleTick's plan data in both USD and INR. The worked bill uses Meta's India rates as AiSensy publishes them for 1 October 2026, and treats platform prices as before GST. We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. For campaigns and notifications, Gupshup or another official API tool is the right choice, and we have said so. About ReplyKit.
