Quick answer

A WhatsApp chatbot in India costs about ₹1,500 to ₹7,000 a month for a small-business plan on the official API, plus Meta's charges: ₹0.8631 per marketing message and ₹0.115 per utility or service message, with 1,000 service messages free per number each month since 1 October 2026. AiSensy, Interakt, Gallabox and WATI are the main local providers. Choose by job: campaigns, or answering and booking.

Why does a WhatsApp chatbot matter so much in India?

Because Indian customers already expect to talk to businesses on WhatsApp. In its May 2026 announcement of business AI for Indian small businesses, Meta cited a 2025 Kantar study finding that 91% of online adults in India chat with a business weekly. That is Meta's own figure, but it matches what any shop owner's phone shows by 10am.

The problem is volume. A coaching institute in admission season or a clinic on a Monday morning gets more "fees kitna hai?" and "Saturday slot available?" messages than one person can answer quickly. Meta's own answer was to launch Business AI in the WhatsApp Business app in India, which it says works in all native languages in India. Third-party chatbots and AI agents fill the same need, with more control.

How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost in India?

The bill has two parts: the provider's monthly plan and Meta's per-message charges on the official API. The second part changed on 1 October 2026, when Meta started charging again for service messages (your replies to customers) after a free 1,000 per business number each month.

Meta's INR rate card, effective 1 October 2026:

Message typeWhen you use itMeta list rate in India
MarketingOffers, festive sales, cart reminders₹0.8631 per message
UtilityOrder updates, appointment reminders₹0.115 per message
AuthenticationOne-time passwords₹0.115 per message
ServiceReplies inside the 24-hour window after a customer writesFirst 1,000 per number per month free, then ₹0.115
After a click-to-WhatsApp adAny reply in the free entry point window (up to 7 days)Free

Meta also launched INR billing in India on 1 January 2026, and eligible businesses must move their accounts to rupee billing by 31 December 2026. Providers add their own rates on top; AiSensy, for example, publishes ₹0.145 per service message after the free 1,000, a little above Meta's list rate.

A worked example. Say a dental clinic in Pune sends 3,000 replies a month and 600 appointment reminders. At Meta's list rates that is 2,000 charged replies at ₹0.115 (₹230) plus 600 reminders at ₹0.115 (₹69), so about ₹300 to Meta before provider markup and GST. The provider plan is the bigger number. A festive offer sent to 5,000 customers is a different story: about ₹4,316 in marketing charges alone.

Can a WhatsApp chatbot reply in Hinglish and Indian languages?

A modern AI agent can. Indian customers rarely write textbook Hindi or textbook English. They type "kal 4 baje ka slot hai kya?" in Roman script, switch to English mid-sentence, and send a voice note when typing gets tiresome. Keyword bots built from button menus break on this; an AI agent reads the meaning.

Can a WhatsApp chatbot handle UPI payments?

ReplyKit does not. It does not take payments in the chat, and it does not check whether a UPI payment arrived. What it can do is tell a customer how you accept payment, if you have written that into its knowledge, and you can instruct it to hand the chat to you when a customer says they have paid, so a person confirms it.

That split is deliberate: a payment confirmation is the one message you do not want an AI to guess. Some official-API providers advertise payment features inside WhatsApp; if collecting money in the chat matters more to you than answering questions, check those offers directly.

What does the DPDP Act mean for a WhatsApp chatbot?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies when your chatbot collects personal data such as names, phone numbers and what customers tell you. The government notified the DPDP Rules on 14 November 2025, with an 18-month phased compliance timeline. According to the official PIB release:

In practice: put a one-line privacy notice in your greeting or profile with a link to your full notice (how to write one), collect only what you need to quote or book, delete data when asked, and know which providers process your chats. This is a summary, not legal advice; a clinic or financial business should ask a lawyer.

Should you use the official API or QR pairing?

Use the official API if you need broadcasts, OTPs or order updates. Use a QR-paired agent if you mainly need inbound questions answered and appointments booked, and you accept the platform risk.

Where ReplyKit fits for Indian businesses

ReplyKit is an AI agent that answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content, books appointments into real open slots with a reminder about 24 hours before, scores leads hot, warm or cold, and hands any chat to you in one click. It connects through Quick Connect, a QR scan that takes about two minutes. That is the unofficial route described above: not the API, not sanctioned by Meta, and a number can be restricted, so use a dedicated number. It replies only to people who message you, and never sends broadcasts.

The honest pricing picture. ReplyKit is priced in US dollars only: $29 (1,000 AI replies), $49 (5,000) or $99 (20,000) a month, and your bank converts the charge to rupees. There are no Meta fees, because it does not use the API. If you mainly need campaigns, a rupee-priced provider like AiSensy will be cheaper and is the right tool. If you mainly need enquiries answered and appointments booked, compare ReplyKit's all-in price with a provider plan plus its AI add-on plus Meta's service charges. See the plans.

Not the right choice if you need UPI collection in the chat, WhatsApp broadcasts, a green tick, or rupee invoicing.

Does the DPDP Act apply to my WhatsApp chatbot?

Yes, if you collect personal data such as names and phone numbers through it. The Rules were notified on 14 November 2025 with an 18-month phased timeline, and require clear consent notices, breach notification and answers to data requests within 90 days. This is not legal advice.

How we know this. On 15 October 2026 we downloaded Meta's INR, USD and other rate cards (effective 1 October 2026) from Meta's developer documentation, read the PIB release on the DPDP Rules, and checked the AiSensy, Interakt, Gallabox and WATI pricing pages; some providers show prices by visitor location, which we note where it applies. We make ReplyKit and price it in US dollars, so read our view with that in mind. For campaigns, OTPs and order updates, an Indian official-API provider is the better choice, and Meta's own Business AI may be enough for simple catalog questions. About ReplyKit.
