Tidio vs Zendesk: when a small business needs more than live chat
Tidio and Zendesk sit at different ends of the support software market. Tidio is a live chat and AI tool that a shop owner can set up in an afternoon. Zendesk is a full helpdesk used by large support teams, with ticketing across email, chat, phone and messaging. Small businesses compare them when they are wondering whether it is time to grow up. This guide helps you decide whether it is.
Quick answer
Tidio is cheaper and simpler: free for 50 conversations, $29 for Starter, Lyro AI from $39 for 50 AI conversations. Zendesk costs $19 to $149 per agent a month, plus $1.50 to $2.00 per automated AI resolution beyond a small allowance, and needs Suite Team for WhatsApp. Choose Zendesk when email tickets, SLAs and reporting matter more than chat.
Two ends of the support market
Tidio is chat-first and built for small teams; Zendesk is ticket-first and built to scale to hundreds of agents.
| Tidio | Zendesk | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Website live chat, then tickets and AI | Email tickets, then messaging, voice and AI |
| Pricing unit | Conversations, AI conversations, Flows visitors | Agents, plus automated resolutions |
| Setup time | Hours | Days to weeks for a full Suite setup |
| Free plan | Yes, 50 conversations a month | No; 14-day trial |
| Best known for | Small online stores | Support teams with SLAs, macros and reporting |
We make ReplyKit, a WhatsApp and website AI agent that is narrower than both; we mention it once at the end.
Zendesk plans, per agent
Zendesk's entry plan is $19 an agent a month billed annually; the Suite plans that most growing teams use cost $55 to $115 billed annually.
| Zendesk plan | Per agent, billed annually | Per agent, monthly | Automated resolutions included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support Team | $19 | $25 | 5 per agent a month |
| Suite Team | $55 | $69 | 5 per agent a month |
| Suite Professional | $115 | $149 | 10 per agent a month |
| Suite Enterprise | Talk to sales | Talk to sales | Custom |
Extra automated resolutions cost $1.50 each when committed in advance or $2.00 pay as you go. Copilot, the agent assistant, is $50 an agent a month billed annually on Professional and above. Checked October 2026 on Zendesk's pricing page; the trial is 14 days on Suite Professional. Our Zendesk pricing guide covers the details.
Tidio plans, per conversation
Tidio's paid plans start at $29 a month and are priced by how many conversations your team answers, with AI sold separately.
- Free: 50 human-answered conversations a month, up to 10 seats.
- Starter: $29 a month ($24.17 billed annually) for 100 conversations.
- Growth: from $59 a month ($49.17 annually) for 250, scaling to 2,000.
- Plus: from $300 a month plus usage, with custom limits.
- Lyro AI: from $39 a month ($32.50 annually) for 50 AI conversations, sold separately.
From Tidio's pricing page, October 2026, with a 7-day trial and no card. Self-serve plans include up to 10 seats at no extra cost, which is the biggest structural difference from Zendesk: a Tidio team of eight pays the same as a team of two.
Automated resolutions against Lyro conversations
Zendesk charges for each conversation its AI resolves beyond a small allowance; Tidio charges for each conversation Lyro replies in. Zendesk's unit is dearer but narrower.
| AI conversations or resolutions a month | Tidio Lyro (monthly) | Zendesk, 3 agents on Suite Team, pay as you go |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | $39 | 15 included, 35 × $2.00 = $70 |
| 200 | About $140 | 185 × $2.00 = $370 |
| 500 | About $350 | 485 × $2.00 = $970 |
Lyro steps above 50 come from Tidio's calculator as recorded in our Tidio pricing guide. Committing to Zendesk resolutions at $1.50 cuts its column by a quarter. Even so, for a small business Lyro is the cheaper way to run AI at volume. Zendesk's case is that its AI sits inside a much larger system of tickets, routing, macros and reporting.
Which plans include WhatsApp
Tidio includes WhatsApp on every plan, including Free. Zendesk includes WhatsApp from Suite Team, not on Support Team.
Tidio gives each number 1,000 free support messages a month, counting Lyro and Flows replies, then bills at the local WhatsApp rate with no markup and an optional spending cap, per Tidio's WhatsApp page. Zendesk lists WhatsApp among the social and business messaging channels on Suite Team and Suite Professional and notes that additional fees apply, without printing the rates. Meta's own rule since 1 October 2026 is that service replies are charged after 1,000 free per business number each month. Three agents, both tools, one month
A hypothetical bike shop with an online store has 3 people on support, about 400 chats a month that need a person, and wants WhatsApp. The AI replies in about 300 chats and fully resolves 250 of them. That gap matters: Tidio bills all 300 Lyro conversations, Zendesk bills only the 250 resolutions, minus the 15 its three agents include. Monthly billing.
| Line | Tidio | Zendesk Suite Team |
|---|---|---|
| Helpdesk | Growth at 400 conversations, about $89 | 3 × $69 = $207 |
| AI | Lyro at 300 conversations, about $210 | 235 extra resolutions × $2.00 = $470 |
| WhatsApp access | Included | Included on Suite Team |
| Total before message fees | About $299 | $677 |
With annual billing and committed resolutions, Zendesk drops to 3 × $55 plus 235 × $1.50, about $518. Tidio stays cheaper for this shop. Zendesk becomes worth it when the extra structure saves real staff time, which usually happens with larger teams and heavy email volume.
Signs you have outgrown Tidio
- Most of your support arrives by email, not chat, and needs proper ticket workflows.
- You need SLAs, escalation rules and audit trails for a regulated customer base.
- You have more than 10 people handling support and need departments and permissions.
- You want phone support in the same system as chat and email.
- Managers need detailed reporting across channels and teams.
The reverse is also worth checking. If your team spends most of its day in chat, rarely uses email tickets and has no reporting needs beyond response times, moving to Zendesk adds cost and setup without changing much for customers.
If two or more of the signs apply, trial Zendesk. If none apply, Tidio is probably the better use of money. Our comparisons of Zendesk vs Freshdesk and Tidio alternatives cover the options in between.
A compact option for messaging-led businesses
We build ReplyKit, so this section is ours to sell. Some businesses comparing Tidio and Zendesk mostly need WhatsApp and website enquiries answered, appointments booked and leads sorted. ReplyKit does that for $29, $49 or $99 a month, with AI replies included rather than charged per resolution, and no Meta fees.
It is not a helpdesk: no email, tickets, SLAs or phone. It connects WhatsApp by QR code as a linked device, which is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta, so a number can be restricted; use a dedicated number. For tickets and email, Tidio or Zendesk is the right tool. For WhatsApp enquiries, start a free 7-day trial.
