Intercom vs Zendesk: which helpdesk costs less once the AI agent is switched on?

Intercom and Zendesk are the two helpdesks most growing support teams shortlist. Their seat prices look close; their AI pricing does not. This guide is for the person who has to sign off the bill: both price lists as checked on 25 October 2026, how each AI agent is charged, and two worked months that show where the money goes.

Quick answer

Intercom is usually cheaper for a small, chat-first team: Essential is $19 a seat billed yearly and Fin AI costs $0.99 per outcome. Zendesk suits teams that need deep ticketing, voice and many channels: Suite Team is $55 a seat billed yearly with 5 automated resolutions per agent a month, then $1.50 to $2.00 each. With AI busy, the AI line becomes the biggest part of either bill.

Intercom or Zendesk: which one should you choose?

Choose Intercom if your support is mostly live chat and in-app messages, your team is small, and you want an AI agent that is quick to train. Choose Zendesk if you run a structured support operation with email, phone and many channels, need mature ticketing, routing and SLAs, and expect to grow into a contact center.

That is the short version. The longer one depends on three things: how many people need a seat, how many conversations your AI agent will close, and which channels you need. The table below is a quick way to place yourself.

How much do Intercom and Zendesk cost per seat?

At entry level they are the same, $19 a seat a month billed yearly, but they buy different things. Intercom's $19 gets chat, a shared inbox, ticketing and a help center. Zendesk's $19 gets email ticketing only; messaging and live chat start at Suite Team, $55.

PlanBilled yearly, per seat a monthBilled monthlyWhat it adds
Intercom Essential$19 (new customers)$29Messenger live chat, shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, public help center, basic automation
Intercom Advanced$85$99Workflow builder, multiple team inboxes, round robin, multilingual help center, 20 free Lite seats
Intercom Expert$132$139SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center, 50 free Lite seats

Zendesk Suite Professional$115$149Skills-based routing, IVR, AI writing tools and reports, App Builder
Zendesk Suite EnterpriseThrough salesThrough salesIntelligent triage, auto assist, approval workflows, sandbox, custom roles

Two details worth knowing. Intercom's $19 Essential price is labelled as a saving for new customers; the page's structured data still lists $29 a seat a month. Lite seats on Intercom are free for internal collaborators on Advanced and Expert but cannot reply to customers. Zendesk offers a 14-day trial of Suite Professional; Intercom offers a 14-day trial with no card that includes Fin and every add-on. Our Zendesk pricing guide and Intercom Fin pricing guide go deeper on each.

How are Fin outcomes and Zendesk automated resolutions charged?

Intercom charges $0.99 each time Fin produces an outcome, at most once per conversation. Zendesk includes a small number of automated resolutions per agent and charges $1.50 each for committed volume or $2.00 pay as you go after that.

Intercom Fin

According to Intercom's pricing page, an outcome is counted when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, when they do not ask for more help after Fin responds, or when Fin completes a workflow, including a handoff. If Fin cannot answer, or the customer asks for a human, there is no charge, and a reopened conversation has its outcome refunded. Fin can also run on another helpdesk, including Zendesk, at the same $0.99 with no seat cost but a minimum monthly commitment, given as 50 outcomes in Intercom's example.

Zendesk AI agents

Zendesk bills AI agents by automated resolution: a customer request the AI resolved without a person. Its comparison table lists 5 included automated resolutions per agent a month on the Team plans and 10 on Suite Professional, with included resolutions capped at 10,000 a year. Beyond that, committed resolutions are $1.50 each and pay-as-you-go resolutions $2.00. Zendesk's Copilot add-on for agents is $50 a seat a month billed yearly.

The practical difference. Intercom's definition of an outcome is broad, so expect your outcome count to sit close to the number of conversations Fin handles. Zendesk's per-resolution price is higher, so even though its definition is narrower, a busy AI agent usually costs more on Zendesk than on Intercom for the same volume.

What do channels, WhatsApp and add-ons cost?

Live chat and email are included with both. WhatsApp, SMS and voice cost extra on both, priced by usage.

On either tool WhatsApp runs on Meta's official platform, so Meta's per-message pricing sits underneath. Since 1 October 2026, Meta charges for service replies after the first 1,000 a month per business number. An AI agent answering WhatsApp all day generates service messages, so ask each vendor how it passes those charges on.

What does a month cost on each? Two worked bills

Both teams below are hypothetical. Prices use yearly billing. The share of conversations the AI resolves is our assumption, not a vendor figure.

A two-person team, 300 conversations, AI resolves 100

LineIntercom EssentialZendesk Suite Team
Seats2 × $19 = $382 × $55 = $110
AI100 outcomes × $0.99 = $9910 included, 90 × $2.00 = $180
Total a month$137$290

A five-person team, 2,000 conversations, AI resolves 1,000

LineIntercom AdvancedZendesk Suite TeamZendesk Suite Professional
Seats5 × $85 = $4255 × $55 = $2755 × $115 = $575
AI1,000 × $0.99 = $99025 included, 975 × $1.50 committed = $1,462.5050 included, 950 × $1.50 = $1,425
Total a month$1,415$1,737.50$2,000

Two patterns stand out. At small scale, Zendesk's higher seat price for chat does most of the damage. At larger scale, the AI line dominates both bills, and the gap between $0.99 and $1.50 a resolution is what separates them. If you are moving from Zendesk and like its ticketing, pricing Fin on top of Zendesk is a legitimate third option. The broader help desk guide for small businesses prices six tools for a three-person team.

What does each do better?

Intercom is stronger at

A modern chat Messenger for websites and apps, a capable AI agent that is included on every plan, low entry seat prices, proactive in-app messaging, and an AI price that only charges when Fin produces an outcome.

Zendesk is stronger at

Email ticketing at scale, telephony and IVR, skills-based routing, a large marketplace of integrations, workforce management and contact center add-ons, and the depth large support operations grow into.

If your customers are mostly on WhatsApp

Intercom and Zendesk are built for support teams. A small business whose customers write on WhatsApp to ask prices, check availability and book appointments often needs something narrower: an agent that answers in the chat and puts the booking in the calendar.

ReplyKit, which we make, is that narrower tool. It answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content, qualifies leads and books into your open slots, for $29 to $99 a month with AI replies included and no seat fees (plans here). It pairs with your number by a QR scan, which is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta; a number can be restricted, so we cap reply rates and recommend a dedicated number. It has no ticketing, SLAs, email channel or phone answering. If you need those, Intercom or Zendesk is the right choice; our ReplyKit vs Zendesk page sets out the trade-off. If WhatsApp is your main channel, you can try ReplyKit free for 7 days.

How we know this. We read Intercom's and Zendesk's pricing pages on 25 October 2026, including Intercom's pricing FAQ and structured data and Zendesk's full plan comparison table, and copied seat prices, AI charges and add-on prices from them. Seat prices for Zendesk Suite Enterprise and Intercom WhatsApp rates are not published, so we left them out. Both worked bills are hypothetical teams and the AI resolution shares are our assumptions. We build ReplyKit, a WhatsApp and website AI agent that competes with neither helpdesk for support teams, and we say where each of them is the better choice. About ReplyKit.
