respond.io vs Intercom: per-contact messaging or per-seat helpdesk with Fin?
People compare respond.io and Intercom when they want one place for customer chats and an AI that answers the easy ones. They come from different starting points: respond.io is a messaging platform built around WhatsApp and social apps, Intercom is a helpdesk built around website chat, email and its Fin AI agent. This guide shows which one fits your channels and what each costs at a realistic volume.
Quick answer
Choose respond.io if most of your customers write on WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook and you want AI included in a flat plan, from $199 a month for Growth. Choose Intercom if you run support through website chat, email and a help center and are happy to pay per seat ($29 to $139) plus $0.99 for each conversation Fin resolves.
What each tool was built for
respond.io is built for conversations on messaging apps; Intercom is built for support tickets across chat, email and self-service. Both now cover each other's ground, but their defaults show where they started.
| Question | respond.io | Intercom |
|---|---|---|
| Home channel | WhatsApp first, plus social messaging apps, email and web chat | Website and in-app Messenger, email, help center |
| Pricing unit | Plan plus monthly active contacts | Seats plus Fin outcomes |
| AI | AI agents from Growth, metered by credits under fair use | Fin AI agent on every plan at $0.99 per outcome |
| Broadcasts | Yes, from Growth | Outbound messages through the Proactive Support Plus add-on |
| Help center | No native help center | Yes, on every plan |
| Trial | 7 days, no card | 14 days, no card, includes Fin and add-ons |
If your customers mostly message you on WhatsApp and you want to run follow-ups and campaigns there, respond.io fits the shape of your work. If your customers mostly come from your website or app and expect articles, tickets and email replies, Intercom fits better.
Price per seat versus price per contact
respond.io charges for the people you talk to; Intercom charges for the people on your team who reply. That one difference decides which is cheaper for you.
respond.io
Starter is $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) with 5 users and no AI agent. Growth is $199 ($159 yearly) with 10 users, the AI agent and 1,000 monthly active contacts, and Advanced is $349 ($279 yearly). Extra contacts cost $12 per 100 on Growth. Checked October 2026 on respond.io's pricing page.
Intercom
Intercom's plans help article lists Essential at $29 a seat billed annually or $39 monthly, Advanced at $85 or $99, and Expert at $132 or $139. When we checked the pricing page in October 2026 it also showed Essential at $19 for new customers, labelled as a 35% saving, so confirm the figure in your own checkout. Copilot, the assistant for your team, is $29 an agent a month billed annually or $35 monthly.
Fin per outcome against respond.io AI credits
Intercom's Fin costs $0.99 every time it resolves or completes a conversation. respond.io includes AI usage in Growth and above under fair use, with credits that grow with your contact tier and $15 per extra 1,000 credits.
Intercom counts an outcome when the customer confirms the answer helped, when the customer does not ask for more help after Fin replies, or when Fin completes a workflow, including a handoff. So the charge applies to most conversations Fin touches, not only perfect resolutions. Our Intercom Fin pricing guide works through what that means at different volumes.
| AI conversations a month | Fin charge at $0.99 | respond.io Growth AI cost |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | $99 | Included |
| 500 | $495 | Included |
| 1,000 | $990 | Included, within fair use |
| 2,000 | $1,980 | Likely needs a higher contact tier |
Fin's case is quality and control: Intercom invests heavily in it, it works across chat, email and other channels, and per-outcome pricing means you pay nothing when it fails. respond.io's case is predictability: the AI is part of the plan you already pay for.
How WhatsApp works on each
Both connect WhatsApp through the official Business API, and on both, Meta's message charges are separate from the plan.
- respond.io treats WhatsApp as the main event: templates, broadcasts and workflows that branch on WhatsApp replies. You top up a credit balance on the platform to pay Meta's fees.
- Intercom lists WhatsApp as a pay-as-you-go channel on every plan. Fin can answer there, and replies land in the same inbox as chat and email. Rates are not printed on the page; Intercom points to its calculator and sales team.
Remember Meta's own rule change: since 1 October 2026, service replies inside the 24-hour window are free only for the first 1,000 per business number each month, according to Meta's pricing documentation. A busy support inbox on WhatsApp now has a per-message cost on either tool. Our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing explains the message categories, and the API versus QR pairing comparison covers when the official route is worth it.
One practical difference: on respond.io, WhatsApp templates, broadcasts and follow-ups are first-class features built into the workflow editor. On Intercom, outbound messaging sits in an add-on, so a business that mainly sends reminders and promotions on WhatsApp will find respond.io more natural to run day to day.
A three-agent online store, priced both ways
A hypothetical online store has 3 people replying, about 1,200 customers writing each month, and an AI agent that closes about 500 conversations without help. Monthly billing, before Meta's WhatsApp charges.
| Line | respond.io Growth | Intercom Essential | Intercom Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan or seats | $199 | 3 × $39 = $117 | 3 × $99 = $297 |
| Extra contacts (200) | 2 × $12 = $24 | Not charged | Not charged |
| AI (500 resolved) | Included | 500 × $0.99 = $495 | 500 × $0.99 = $495 |
| Total a month | $223 | $612 | $792 |
If the same store had only 100 AI resolutions a month, Intercom Essential would be $216 and roughly level with respond.io. The higher your AI volume, the more respond.io's included AI pays off. The more you depend on email, help articles and ticketing, the more Intercom's helpdesk is worth the difference.

Where a smaller agent fits
We build ReplyKit, so this section has an obvious interest. It is a narrower tool than either platform: an AI agent for WhatsApp and website chat that answers from your own content, books appointments into real open slots and hands chats to you in one click. Plans are $29, $49 or $99 a month with AI replies included and no Meta fees.
The reason there are no Meta fees is also the main limit. ReplyKit links to WhatsApp by scanning a QR code, an unofficial method that Meta does not sanction, so a number can be restricted; we recommend a dedicated number and enforce reply limits. There is no email channel, no help center, no broadcasts and no integrations beyond CSV export. If you need a helpdesk, Intercom is the better tool; if you need campaigns, respond.io is. If you need fast inbound answers, start a free trial and test it on your own questions.
