respond.io vs Chatwoot: pay for a managed platform or run open source?
Chatwoot often comes up when someone looks at respond.io's price and asks whether there is an open source way to do the same thing. There is, with trade-offs. Chatwoot is an open source customer support inbox you can run on your own server for free or rent as a cloud service per agent. respond.io is a managed platform with deeper WhatsApp automation. This guide compares cost, effort and capability.
Quick answer
Chatwoot is far cheaper: free to self-host, or $19 to $99 per agent a month on its cloud, with WhatsApp through the official Cloud API and Captain AI credits included on paid plans. respond.io starts at $99 a month and $199 for AI agents, but adds stronger workflows, broadcasts and lifecycle tools. Pick Chatwoot for support on a budget, respond.io for WhatsApp sales automation.
Open source inbox versus managed platform
Chatwoot gives you the inbox and lets you own it; respond.io gives you the inbox plus automation and runs it for you. Both handle WhatsApp, website chat, email and social channels in one place.
Chatwoot's code is public, so you can install it on your own server, keep conversation data in your own database and change how it works. Chatwoot also sells a hosted cloud version for teams that do not want to run servers. respond.io is closed source and hosted only, with a heavier feature set around WhatsApp: broadcasts, workflow automation, lifecycle stages and AI agents that act on conversations.
Chatwoot and respond.io price tables

| respond.io | Monthly | Billed yearly | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $99 | $79 a month | 5 users, no AI agents |
| Growth | $199 | $159 a month | 10 users, 1,000 contacts, AI agents, broadcasts |
| Advanced | $349 | $279 a month | 10 users, 1,000 contacts, webhooks, SSO |
From respond.io's pricing page, October 2026, with a 7-day trial and no card. Extra contacts cost $12 per 100 on Growth.
What self-hosting really costs
Self-hosted Chatwoot has no licence fee, but it is not free to run. The bill moves from a vendor invoice to your own time and hosting.
| Cost | Who pays on Chatwoot self-hosted | Who pays on respond.io |
|---|---|---|
| Server and database | You, at your hosting provider's rates | respond.io |
| Updates and security patches | You | respond.io |
| Backups and recovery | You | respond.io |
| Meta app setup for WhatsApp | You, with your own Meta app credentials | Guided in the product |
| AI | Not in Community; Premium Support at $19 per agent | Included from Growth |
| Support | Discord and GitHub on Community | Vendor support |
For a developer-run company, self-hosting can be the cheapest way to own the whole stack. For a clinic or a shop, the hours spent on updates and a broken WhatsApp webhook usually cost more than a subscription.
Connecting WhatsApp on each
Both connect through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform, and Meta's message charges apply on both. The setup effort differs.
- Chatwoot Cloud offers a quick setup through Meta's embedded signup from the Startups plan; it is not available on the free Hacker plan. A number already on the WhatsApp Business app can connect through coexistence, which unlinks WhatsApp Web and does not sync group chats, per Chatwoot's setup guide. Self-hosted installs need their own Meta app configured first, or a manual setup with tokens and webhooks.
- respond.io connects through its own onboarding and bills WhatsApp from a credit balance you top up.
Meta charges per delivered message: templates in every category, and since 1 October 2026 service replies after the first 1,000 per number each month, per Meta's pricing documentation. On Chatwoot you pay Meta directly through your own WhatsApp Business account; budget for it as a separate line. Our WhatsApp Business API pricing explainer shows how the categories work.
Captain AI and respond.io AI agents
Chatwoot's Captain is included with monthly credits on paid plans; respond.io's AI agents are included from Growth under fair use. Both can answer customers from a knowledge base and help agents draft replies.
Chatwoot says Captain credits cover reply suggestions, summaries, translation and knowledge base answers, with extra credits at $20 per 1,000. Its self-hosted page notes that Captain uses OpenAI's GPT models. respond.io's AI agents can also qualify leads and trigger workflow steps, and extra AI credits cost $15 per 1,000 if you exceed the allowance.
If you need an AI that mainly answers support questions from articles, Captain is a sensible fit. If you need an AI that moves leads through sales stages and starts follow-ups, respond.io goes further.
A four-person support team, three ways
A hypothetical online retailer has 4 support agents and about 1,500 customers messaging each month across WhatsApp and website chat. Assume AI needs about 2,000 credits a month. Monthly, before Meta's charges.
| Line | Chatwoot Cloud Business | Chatwoot self-hosted Premium | respond.io Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seats or plan | 4 × $39 = $156 | 4 × $19 = $76 | $199 |
| Extra contacts | Not charged | Not charged | 5 × $12 = $60 |
| Extra AI credits | About $40 (1,500 over the 500 listed) | Depends on your setup | Included under fair use |
| Hosting and upkeep | Included | Your server plus staff time | Included |
| Software total | About $196 | $76 plus hosting | $259 |
Chatwoot wins on price for a support-focused team. respond.io's extra $60 to $180 a month buys broadcasts, workflow automation and a vendor that runs everything.

When both are more than you need
We build ReplyKit, so read this as a vendor's view. A solo owner or a small team that only wants enquiries answered may not need a full inbox platform at all. ReplyKit answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content, books appointments, hands chats to you in one click and keeps a simple leads list, for $29 to $99 a month with AI included and no Meta fees.
The trade-off is the connection. ReplyKit links WhatsApp by QR code as a linked device, an unofficial route Meta does not sanction, so a number can be restricted; use a dedicated number. It is not open source, cannot be self-hosted, and has no broadcasts, email channel or integrations beyond CSV export. If those matter, Chatwoot or respond.io is the right call. Otherwise, start a free 7-day trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chatwoot a free alternative to respond.io?
Partly. Chatwoot's self-hosted Community edition is free and its cloud Hacker plan is free for 2 agents with live chat only. WhatsApp and Captain AI need a paid plan, and self-hosting has server and maintenance costs.
Does Chatwoot support WhatsApp?
Yes, through Meta's official WhatsApp Cloud API. Chatwoot Cloud offers a quick embedded signup from the Startups plan, and self-hosted installs can connect with their own Meta app or a manual setup. Meta's message fees apply.
Does Chatwoot have AI like respond.io?
Yes. Captain is Chatwoot's AI, included on paid cloud plans with 300 to 800 credits a month and extra credits at $20 per 1,000. respond.io's AI agents go further into lead qualification and workflow actions.
Can Chatwoot send WhatsApp broadcasts?
Chatwoot is built for conversations rather than campaigns. If WhatsApp broadcasts and follow-up sequences are central to your business, respond.io is designed for that work.
Is self-hosted Chatwoot hard to run?
It needs someone comfortable with servers, updates and backups, plus a Meta app for WhatsApp quick setup. For a non-technical business, Chatwoot Cloud or respond.io is the safer choice.
Which is cheaper for a small team?
Chatwoot. Four agents on Chatwoot Cloud Business cost $156 a month before extra AI credits, while respond.io Growth costs $199 for up to 10 users plus any contacts above 1,000.
