How to automate WhatsApp messages for free: seven methods compared on effort, cost, risk and what they can really do
There are seven realistic ways to automate WhatsApp without paying, and they do very different jobs. Some only acknowledge a message, some speed up your typing, one needs a developer, and one is free only for a week. Here is each method, how to start, and what it cannot do.
Quick answer
The safest free way to automate WhatsApp messages is the WhatsApp Business app: a greeting message, an away message on a schedule, and quick replies. Android auto-reply apps can answer from notifications but carry privacy and terms risks; iPhone has no equivalent. Meta's Cloud API gives each number 1,000 free service messages a month but needs a developer. An AI agent trial tests real answers.
How can you automate WhatsApp messages for free?
You can automate WhatsApp for free with the WhatsApp Business app's built-in tools, with an Android notification-reply app, with Meta's Cloud API free tier, or with a free trial of an AI agent. Only the Business app is official, free and simple at the same time. The table compares all seven methods; effort figures are our estimates.
| Method | Effort (estimate) | Cost | Risk | Can | Cannot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Greeting and away messages | 15 minutes | Free | None, official | Send a fixed message automatically | Answer the question |
| 2. Quick replies and labels | 30 minutes | Free | None, official | Insert saved answers fast; sort chats | Send anything without you |
| 3. Catalog | 1 to 2 hours | Free | None, official | Let customers browse products and prices | Reply to messages |
| 4. Android auto-reply apps | 20 minutes | Free or freemium | Privacy and terms risk | Reply to incoming notifications by rules | Run on iPhone; understand context |
| 5. iPhone Shortcuts | Varies | Free | Low | Help you send messages you start | React to incoming WhatsApp messages |
| 6. Cloud API free tier | Days, for a developer | Free up to 1,000 service messages a number a month | Low, official | Anything you code | Work without a developer and a server |
| 7. AI agent free trial | About 15 minutes | Free for the trial | Depends on the connection | Answer, book and qualify from your content | Stay free after the trial |
1. Greeting and away messages (WhatsApp Business app)
These are the only fully automatic, official and free messages on WhatsApp. They need the WhatsApp Business app, not regular WhatsApp. Effort: 15 minutes. Cost: free. Risk: none.
WhatsApp's help centre says a greeting message is sent when a customer messages you for the first time, or after 14 days of no messages in that chat. An away message can be sent always, on a custom schedule, or outside the business hours in your profile, and you choose recipients: everyone, people not in your address book, everyone except some, or only some. Your phone needs an active internet connection for either to send.
To set one up, open the Tools tab, tap Away message (or Greeting message), turn it on, edit the text, set the schedule and recipients, then save. Full steps for Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web are in how to set auto reply on WhatsApp, and wording ideas are in our after-hours templates.
What it cannot do: answer "How much is a cleaning?" It sends the same text to everyone, then the customer waits for you.
2. Quick replies and labels
Quick replies are semi-automatic: saved answers you insert with a shortcut, so a person still presses send. Labels sort chats so nothing is forgotten. Effort: 30 minutes. Cost: free. Risk: none.
From the Tools tab, tap Quick replies, tap the plus button, write the message, set a shortcut and save. In a chat, type "/" to see them all. WhatsApp's help centre says you can store up to 50, that shortcuts start with "/" and can be up to 25 characters with no spaces, and that the app also creates default replies from your business profile, such as your hours and address. Labels (up to 20) let you tag chats like "New lead" or "Waiting for payment"; WhatsApp notes that labels are being replaced by lists in some versions.
What it cannot do: reply when you are not there. It saves typing, not waiting. Our quick replies and labels guide has setups that work well.
3. The catalog
A catalog answers product and price questions before they are asked. Customers browse it inside WhatsApp. Effort: one to two hours. Cost: free. Risk: none.
From the Tools tab, tap Catalog, then Add new item. WhatsApp's help centre says each item can have up to 10 images or videos, needs a name and country of origin, and is reviewed against the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy before customers can see it. Add the catalog link to your greeting message so new customers find it.
What it cannot do: reply. It is a shop window, not a salesperson. See our catalog guide.
4. Android auto-reply apps
On Android, third-party auto-reply apps can answer WhatsApp messages from the notification shade. They are free or freemium, take 20 minutes to set up, and carry real privacy and terms-of-service risk. We do not recommend any specific one as safe.
How they work: Android lets an app you grant "notification access" read the notifications other apps post. The auto-reply app watches for WhatsApp notifications, checks your rules (a keyword, a contact, a time), and replies through the notification's reply button. WhatsApp itself is not changed.
The risks, plainly:
- Privacy. Notification access means the app can see every notification on the phone, including bank alerts and one-time passwords. You are trusting its developer completely.
- Terms. WhatsApp's Terms of Service prohibit auto-messaging and non-personal use unless WhatsApp has authorised it. A notification app is not authorised.
- Reliability. If the phone is off, asleep under battery saving, or the notification is grouped or dismissed, no reply goes out.
- Quality. Rules match keywords. They do not understand "is the 3pm still free tomorrow or did someone take it".
What it cannot do: run on iPhone, read your price list, or hand a chat to a person. Never use these apps to message people who did not write to you first.
5. iPhone Shortcuts: what it can and cannot do
On iPhone, you cannot automatically reply to incoming WhatsApp messages with Shortcuts. Apple's Shortcuts app can automate some things, but iOS does not give ordinary apps a way to read and answer another app's notifications the way Android does.
Apple's guide to communication triggers in Shortcuts lists a Message trigger and an Email trigger; it does not list a trigger for messages arriving in third-party apps such as WhatsApp. Shortcuts can still save time on messages you start yourself, for example opening a chat with a preset text. For automatic replies on an iPhone, use the WhatsApp Business app's greeting and away messages (method 1), or a tool that connects to WhatsApp directly.
What it cannot do: notice a new WhatsApp message and answer it.
6. The WhatsApp Cloud API free tier
Meta's official Cloud API is free to start and free up to a monthly allowance, but it is a developer tool. Effort: days of work for a developer. Cost: free within the allowance, then per message. Risk: low, because it is official.
The real conditions, from Meta's documentation as of October 2026:
- You need a Meta developer account, a Meta app with the WhatsApp use case, a business portfolio, a phone number, and a webhook server you host to receive messages.
- Meta charges per delivered message, by category and country. From 1 October 2026, each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month (normal replies within 24 hours of a customer's message). After that, replies are charged.
- Without a payment method, Meta stops delivering service messages once the free tier is used.
- Template messages (marketing, utility, authentication) are charged, except inside a free entry point window, which opens when someone messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad and can last up to 7 days.
What it cannot do: anything until someone writes the code. There is no inbox, AI or booking out of the box. Most businesses use the API through a paid provider instead. See our API pricing guide and build vs buy guide.
7. An AI agent on a free trial
An AI agent is the only method here that reads the customer's question and answers it from your own information. Paid agents usually offer a free trial, which is the honest way to test one. Effort: about 15 minutes. Cost: free during the trial.
We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. ReplyKit has a 7-day free trial with no credit card and 300 AI replies; nothing is charged unless you choose a plan. You paste your website, upload price lists or PDFs, set your hours, and connect your number with Quick Connect, a QR scan that pairs it as a linked device. Quick Connect is unofficial, not the WhatsApp Business API, and a number can be restricted; read will WhatsApp ban my number for automation? before you connect, and use a dedicated number. ReplyKit only replies (no broadcasts or bulk sends) and caps each number at 30 AI replies an hour and 200 a day by default.
In return it answers in the customer's language, understands voice notes and photos, books real open slots, and hands any chat to you in one click. After the trial it is $29 to $99 a month; see pricing. Meta Business Agent, Meta's own AI in the Business app, is another option where it has been switched on, though WhatsApp's help centre says availability is limited so far.
What it cannot do: stay free after seven days, send broadcasts, or give you the green tick.
Which method should you use?
Start with methods 1 to 3 today; they are official and free. Add an AI agent only when you can see customers waiting. A simple way to decide:
- Under about 10 messages a day, mostly while you are at your phone: greeting, away and quick replies are enough.
- Many messages arrive after hours or while you work: the away message buys goodwill, not answers. Test an AI agent on a free trial for a week and count what it handles.
- You have a developer and want the official route: the Cloud API free tier, knowing replies past 1,000 a month are charged.
- You are on Android and tempted by a notification app: read its permissions and privacy policy first, keep it to inbound replies, and never put it on your only business number.

Frequently asked questions
How can I automate WhatsApp messages for free?
Use the WhatsApp Business app's free greeting message, away message and quick replies. They are official and take about 15 minutes to set up. They acknowledge customers but do not answer questions; for that you need an AI agent, which you can test on a free trial.
How do I automate WhatsApp replies on Android?
Set up greeting and away messages in the WhatsApp Business app from the Tools tab. Third-party Android auto-reply apps can also reply from notifications, but they need access to all your notifications and break WhatsApp's rules on auto-messaging, so use them with care.
Can I automate WhatsApp messages on iPhone?
Yes, with the WhatsApp Business app's greeting and away messages. Apple's Shortcuts cannot react to incoming WhatsApp messages, so there is no free iPhone app that reads and answers them for you.
How do I automate WhatsApp Business messages?
Open the Tools tab in the WhatsApp Business app, turn on a greeting message and an away message, and create quick replies for common answers. For automatic answers to real questions, connect an AI agent or use the official Cloud API through a developer or provider.
Is the WhatsApp Cloud API free?
Partly. Meta's pricing documentation says each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month from 1 October 2026, then replies are charged, and template messages are charged too. You also need a developer and a server.
Can I schedule WhatsApp messages for free?
The WhatsApp Business app schedules away messages but does not schedule ordinary outgoing messages. Scheduled outbound sending needs other tools, and sending to many people at once risks your number. ReplyKit does not schedule outbound messages.
