Free WhatsApp chatbot: what is actually free in 2026, what free costs you, and the honest middle path

You want WhatsApp to answer customers without paying for software. That is possible, up to a point. This guide shows exactly what you can get for free today, the real limits on every free plan we checked, and the point where free starts costing you more than it saves.

Quick answer

Yes, but only partly. The WhatsApp Business app is free and can send a greeting, an away message and saved quick replies, but it cannot answer questions. Chatbot platforms with free plans cap you at 25 to 100 contacts or conversations a month, and several keep WhatsApp for paid plans. Open-source bots are free to download but you pay for hosting, AI and upkeep, and they carry a ban risk.

Is there a free WhatsApp chatbot?

There are three kinds of free, and they are very different. The WhatsApp Business app is free and has simple automatic messages built in. Some chatbot platforms have free plans with small caps. And open-source code is free to download, but not free to run. None of them gives a small business a chatbot that actually answers customer questions from its own information, at real volume, for nothing.

A quick definition helps here. A chatbot is software that replies to messages for you. A rule-based chatbot follows buttons and keywords you set up. An AI agent reads the customer's message in their own words and answers from your business information. Most "free" offers are the first kind, or the second kind with a tiny allowance. We explain the difference in chatbot vs AI agent.

What the free WhatsApp Business app can do

The WhatsApp Business app is free and gives you three automatic or semi-automatic tools: a greeting message, an away message and quick replies. WhatsApp's help centre describes the app as free to download and free to use for small businesses.

Greeting message

Sent automatically when a customer messages you for the first time, or after 14 days with no messages in that chat, according to WhatsApp's help centre. Good for setting expectations.

Away message

Sent automatically when you are away: always, on a custom schedule, or outside the business hours on your profile. You choose who gets it.

Quick replies

Saved answers you insert by typing "/" in a chat. Up to 50 can be stored. Faster typing, but a person still has to send them.

Labels and catalog

Labels sort chats (for example "New lead" or "Paid"). The catalog shows products and prices inside WhatsApp. Both help customers and staff, neither replies on its own.

What the app cannot do: read a question and answer it. A greeting says "Hi, thanks for messaging", and the customer still waits for you to reply to "Do you have a slot on Saturday?" If that is what you need, the app is the floor, not the solution. We cover setup step by step in how to set auto reply on WhatsApp.

One more built-in option is appearing in 2026. Meta Business Agent, Meta's own AI, is being switched on inside the WhatsApp Business app for some businesses. WhatsApp's help centre says it is only available in limited countries to select businesses so far, and that greeting messages are turned off when it is connected. If you see "AI agent" in your Tools tab, it is worth a look; our Meta Business Agent explainer covers what it does.

Which chatbot platforms have a free plan for WhatsApp?

Several do, but the free plans are small and some do not include WhatsApp at all. We opened each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026. Prices change often, so check before you sign up.

PlatformFree plan (checked October 2026)WhatsApp on free?First paid step
ManyChat$0, 25 active contacts a month, up to 4 active automationsNo. Free connects two of Instagram, TikTok, Messenger or TelegramPro, $29 a month billed annually, which lists WhatsApp and AI replies
Tidio$0, 50 billable conversations a month; its Lyro AI gets 50 free conversations for the lifetime of the accountIts plan comparison lists WhatsApp on every plan, including FreeStarter, about $24 a month billed annually
Botpress$0, 100 conversations a month, 3 AI agents, no top-upsWhatsApp is named as a Plus plan feature in its pricing FAQPlus, $150 a month billed annually
AiSensy"Free Forever" plan; broadcasting is not available on itYes, on the official API, with Meta's message charges billed separatelyBasic, ₹1,500 a month; the AI agent is an add-on at ₹1,350 a month for 1,000 AI messages
ChatbaseNo free plan; paid plans offer a 7-day trialOn all paid plansHobby, $32 a month billed annually, 700 message credits

Each of these is a real product with real strengths. ManyChat is excellent for Instagram and Messenger. Tidio is a strong website live chat. Botpress gives developers a capable builder. AiSensy is built for broadcasts on the official API. The point is only that "free" on these platforms means a trial-sized allowance, and WhatsApp often sits behind the first paid tier.

Do you pay Meta if your chatbot uses the official API?

Usually yes, beyond a free allowance. Platforms that connect through the official WhatsApp Business Platform pass on Meta's per-message charges, and from 1 October 2026 that includes ordinary replies.

Meta's pricing documentation says it charges per delivered message by category and country. As of 1 October 2026 Meta resumed charging for service messages (normal replies inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes), with a free tier of 1,000 service messages per business phone number per month. After that, each reply is charged. Meta also says that without a payment method, service messages stop being delivered once the free tier is used. Replies sent within a free entry point window, which opens when someone messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad, are not charged. The full breakdown is in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide.

So a "free" chatbot plan on the official API can still produce a Meta bill once you pass 1,000 replies a month on a number. Say a dental clinic gets 40 messages a day and the bot sends two replies to each: that is roughly 2,400 replies a month, well past the free tier.

Can you build a WhatsApp chatbot for free with open source?

You can download the code for free. Running it is not free. Popular open-source libraries such as whatsapp-web.js and Baileys connect to WhatsApp as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does.

Both projects say plainly that they are not affiliated with WhatsApp. The whatsapp-web.js readme warns that WhatsApp does not allow bots or unofficial clients and that using it is not guaranteed to avoid a block. WhatsApp's own help centre says that linking your account to an unofficial app may result in a temporary or permanent ban. Then you still need a server that stays on all day (cloud servers start at a few dollars a month, for example DigitalOcean's smallest at $4), an AI service billed per use if you want real answers, and someone to fix it when WhatsApp updates. We go through the whole build in open-source WhatsApp bot vs hosted.

What free really costs: time and risk

Free options cost you in setup hours, upkeep and, for unofficial tools, the chance of losing your number. Here is the honest picture. Time figures are our estimates for a non-technical owner, not measurements.

OptionMoneySetup time (estimate)Answers real questions?Main risk
Business app built-ins$030 minutesNo, fixed messages onlyCustomers still wait for you
Vendor free plan$0 until you pass the cap2 to 6 hours to build flowsMenus and keywords; AI is small or paidCap hit mid-month; Meta charges on the official API
Open source, self-hostedServer plus AI usageSeveral days for a developerOnly if you build itUnofficial; number can be banned; upkeep falls on you
Meta Business AgentPer Meta's terms in your countryUnder an hour where availableYes, from your catalog, website and documentsLimited availability so far
Paid AI agent on a free trial$0 during the trialAbout 15 minutesYes, from your own contentDepends on how it connects (see below)

The hidden cost is the same in every row: the customers who message while nobody answers. Research on response times, summarised in our response time guide, shows how fast leads cool. A free tool that only says "we will get back to you" does not change that.

How to make a WhatsApp chatbot for free, step by step

Start with what costs nothing, and only pay when you can see the gap. This order works for most small businesses.

  1. Install or switch to the WhatsApp Business app. You can move your existing number from regular WhatsApp; WhatsApp's help centre recommends making a backup first.
  2. Fill in your business profile, including hours. The "outside of business hours" away schedule only works if hours are set.
  3. Turn on a greeting and an away message that tell people when you will reply and what to send you. Our after-hours templates help.
  4. Save your ten most common answers as quick replies. Prices, location, hours, booking steps.
  5. Write those answers down as a one-page FAQ. You will need it for any bot, free or paid.
  6. Count for one week how many messages arrive when you cannot reply. If it is a handful, stop here. If it is dozens, test an AI agent on that FAQ.

Where ReplyKit fits, and when it does not

We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. ReplyKit is a paid AI agent with a free trial: 7 days, no credit card, 300 AI replies, and nothing is charged unless you choose a plan. It answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content (your website, PDFs, price lists and Q&A), books appointments into real open slots, scores leads and hands a chat to you in one click. If the answer is not in your content, it says so and flags the question for you to teach once, instead of guessing.

It connects through Quick Connect, which scans a QR code and pairs your number as a linked device. That is unofficial: it is not the WhatsApp Business API, Meta does not sanction it, and a number can be restricted. Read will WhatsApp ban my number for automation? before you connect. We reduce the risk with replies only (no broadcasts or cold outreach), default limits of 30 AI replies an hour and 200 a day per number, and a warm-up for new numbers, and we recommend a dedicated number. Because it does not use the official API, there are no Meta fees. After the trial, plans are $29, $49 or $99 a month; see pricing.

ReplyKit is not the right choice if you need broadcasts or marketing campaigns, the green tick, Instagram or Messenger, or zero tolerance for a number restriction. For those, an official-API platform is the better route. And if you get five messages a week, the free Business app is enough. If you are somewhere in between, a free trial on your real questions will tell you more than any comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp chatbot free?

The WhatsApp Business app is free and includes greeting messages, away messages and quick replies, but it cannot answer questions on its own. Chatbot platforms offer free plans with small caps, often 25 to 100 contacts or conversations a month, and some keep WhatsApp for paid tiers. Anything that answers real questions at volume costs money somewhere.

Is there a free WhatsApp AI chatbot?

Not one that answers your customers from your own information at real volume. Tidio's AI has 50 free conversations for the lifetime of an account and Botpress's free plan has 100 conversations a month, as checked in October 2026. Meta Business Agent is built into the Business app for some businesses, but availability is limited so far.

How do I make a WhatsApp chatbot for free?

Switch to the WhatsApp Business app, complete your profile and hours, turn on a greeting and an away message, and save quick replies for your common questions. That covers acknowledgement, not answers. To test real answers, run a free plan or trial against your own FAQ for a week.

What is the best free WhatsApp chatbot for business?

For most small businesses the best free option is the WhatsApp Business app's built-in messages, because they are official and cost nothing. If you need actual answers, compare a free plan's caps with a no-card trial of a paid agent. Choose on your real message volume, not the word free.

Do I pay Meta for chatbot replies?

On the official WhatsApp Business Platform, yes after the free tier. Meta's pricing documentation says that from 1 October 2026 each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month and later replies are charged. Tools that connect by QR pairing have no Meta fees, but they are unofficial.

Are free WhatsApp bot apps safe?

Apps and libraries that link to your account unofficially can get your number restricted or banned, according to WhatsApp's help centre. Android auto-reply apps also need access to all your notifications, which is a privacy risk. Use a dedicated number for anything unofficial.

How we know this. We build and run a WhatsApp AI agent, so we know what each option does in practice and where it breaks. For this article we opened WhatsApp's help centre pages on greeting, away and quick replies, Meta's WhatsApp pricing documentation (including the 1 October 2026 service message change), and the pricing pages of ManyChat, Tidio, Botpress, AiSensy and Chatbase in October 2026, and the GitHub pages of the open-source libraries named. Time estimates are our estimates, labelled as such. We sell ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly; for broadcasts, the green tick or zero restriction risk, an official-API platform is the better choice, and for very low volume the free Business app is enough.
