Quick answer

Conversational marketing means replacing forms, "contact us" pages and one-way campaigns with a chat the customer starts, on WhatsApp, your website or social apps, and answering it straight away. The goal is to move someone from a question to a booking or sale inside that one conversation. It works when replies are instant and stops working when it becomes unsolicited broadcasting.

What does conversational marketing mean?

Conversational marketing is marketing that runs on two-way conversations instead of one-way messages. Instead of sending a visitor to a form and calling them back tomorrow, you invite them into a chat and answer now. The conversation does the work a landing page, a brochure and a sales call used to do separately.

Three ideas sit underneath it:

The term was popularised by B2B chat software vendors for website chat, but for most small businesses outside the US, the main stage is WhatsApp. That is where customers already message shops, clinics and tradespeople, and where an enquiry can become a booking without anyone changing app.

How is conversational marketing different from chatbots and conversational commerce?

A chatbot is a tool. Conversational marketing is the strategy that tool serves. Conversational commerce is the part of it where the sale itself happens in the chat.

TermWhat it isExample
Conversational marketingA strategy: win and qualify customers through chats they startAn ad opens WhatsApp; the reply answers the price question and offers a slot
Conversational commerceBuying and selling inside the chatThe customer picks a product and confirms the order in the same thread
Chatbot or AI agentSoftware that repliesThe thing that answers at 11pm
Live chatPeople replying in a chat windowA receptionist answering the website chat
Broadcast or bulk messagingOne-to-many outbound messagesA promotion sent to a contact list. Not conversational, even if sent on WhatsApp

If you want the selling side in more depth, our explainer on conversational commerce covers it.

Seven conversational marketing examples a small business can copy

Each example below is an entry point (where the conversation starts), a first reply, and the outcome you are aiming for. The businesses are hypothetical; the patterns are the ones we see work in chat.

1. Click-to-WhatsApp ad

Meta's click-to-message ads open a chat on WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram instead of a web page. A physiotherapy clinic runs one for back pain. First reply: the price of a first assessment and two open slots. Outcome: a booking. See our click-to-WhatsApp ads guide.

2. Pricing page chat

A cleaning company's website chat greets visitors on the pricing page with "Want a quote for your home? Tell me the number of bedrooms." Outcome: a quote and a booked clean, instead of a bounce.

3. QR code at the counter

A bakery puts "Order a custom cake on WhatsApp" with a QR code by the till. First reply: sizes, flavours, lead time. Outcome: an order with a pickup date.

4. Google Business Profile chat

A tyre shop adds a WhatsApp link to its profile. First reply: "Which car and tyre size? I'll check stock." Outcome: a fitting slot. How to add the link is in our Google Business Profile guide.

5. Instagram bio to WhatsApp

A nail studio's bio says "Book on WhatsApp". First reply: the price list and "Which design are you thinking of? A photo helps." Outcome: a booking with the right duration.

6. Quote follow-up

A renovation firm sends one message to someone who asked for a quote last week and went quiet: "Any questions on the quote? Happy to adjust it." Outcome: a site visit, or a clear no. One message, never a sequence.

7. After the appointment

A salon asks a customer it served today, in the same chat: "How did it go? If you're happy, a Google review helps us a lot." Outcome: reviews and a rebooking. Wording is in our review request templates.

Notice what all seven share: the customer had already started a conversation or a relationship with the business. Nobody received a message out of the blue.

How to build a conversational marketing strategy in five steps

You do not need a big plan. A small business strategy fits on one page: where conversations start, what you say first, and what counts as success.

  1. Pick two entry points. Choose the two places your customers already start contact, such as a click-to-WhatsApp ad and your website, and put a chat button there. Do two well before adding a third.
  2. Write the first reply for each. Match what the customer just saw. Someone who clicked an ad for teeth whitening should get the whitening price, not "Hi, how can I help?". End with one easy question.
  3. Decide the questions that lead to a next step. List the two or three facts you need before you can offer a booking, quote or order, and ask them one at a time. Our guide to AI lead qualification shows how to phrase them.
  4. Set the handover rule. Decide which conversations a person takes over: complaints, custom jobs, large orders and anyone who asks for a human.
  5. Measure conversations to outcomes. Each month, count conversations by entry point and how many became a booking, quote or sale. Fix the weakest entry point first.

Step two is where most of the gain is. The difference between a generic greeting and an answer to the question the customer was about to ask is often the difference between a reply and silence.

Which metrics show conversational marketing is working?

Track four numbers, all from your own chats: how fast you reply, how many conversations reach a next step, how many of those convert, and where the good ones came from. Compare against your own last month rather than industry averages, which vary too much to be useful.

MetricHow to count itWhat it tells you
First reply timeMinutes from first message to first answerWhether conversations are real-time or just slow email
Next-step rateConversations that reached a booking, quote or order, divided by all new conversationsWhether your first reply and questions work
Close rateNext steps that became paid workWhether chat leads are as good as phone leads
Source mixNew conversations by entry pointWhich ad, page or QR code to invest in

Where conversational marketing goes wrong

It fails in two ways: when it stops being a conversation the customer started, and when the customer gets trapped talking to a bot that cannot help.

Conversational marketing tools

You need two things: a place for conversations to happen (WhatsApp, a website chat, social inboxes) and something that replies when you cannot. Prices below were checked on each vendor's own page in October 2026.

Where ReplyKit fits in a conversational marketing plan

We make ReplyKit, so weigh this accordingly. ReplyKit is the "something that replies" for WhatsApp and website chat. It answers from your own content in seconds, asks the qualifying questions you set, books appointments into real open slots, and scores each lead hot, warm or cold so you know who to call. You can take over any chat in one click. On Growth and Pro it sends one gentle follow-up if a lead goes quiet, which covers example 6 above.

It covers entry points 1 to 6 for WhatsApp and website traffic: anything that opens a chat with your number or your site. Plans start at $29 a month (see all plans), and you can start a 7-day free trial without a card.

It does not cover the outbound side. ReplyKit only replies; it does not send broadcasts, scheduled campaigns or marketing messages to lists, and it does not handle Instagram or Messenger inboxes. WhatsApp connects through Quick Connect, an unofficial QR pairing that is not the official API and is not sanctioned by Meta; read whether WhatsApp can ban your number first. Before pairing you see one plain notice, and pressing Connect is your acceptance of section 3 of our terms. If your plan relies on opted-in WhatsApp campaigns, you need an official API provider.

Frequently asked questions

What is conversational marketing in simple words?

It is marketing through two-way chats that the customer starts, answered in real time, with the aim of reaching a next step such as a booking or a sale in the same conversation. It replaces forms and call-backs with a chat.

What is an example of conversational marketing?

An ad that opens WhatsApp instead of a web page, where the first reply answers the price question and offers two appointment slots. The customer goes from ad to booking in one chat.

Is conversational marketing the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot is one tool you can use for it. Conversational marketing is the wider approach of starting and handling sales conversations in chat, whether a person or software replies.

What is the difference between conversational marketing and conversational commerce?

Conversational marketing is about winning and qualifying customers through chats. Conversational commerce is the part where the purchase itself happens in the chat, such as confirming an order or a booking.

Is sending WhatsApp promotions conversational marketing?

Not really. A promotion sent to a list is one-way broadcasting. On WhatsApp it also needs opt-in permission under the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, and people who opt out must be respected.

How do I measure conversational marketing?

Track first reply time, the share of conversations that reach a booking or quote, how many of those become paid work, and which entry point each conversation came from. Compare against your own previous month.

How we know this. We build an AI agent that sits at the reply end of conversational marketing, so the examples reflect the entry points and first replies we see working in chat. Meta's ad format and the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy were read at the source in October 2026, and tool prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page the same month. We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. If your strategy depends on outbound campaigns, an official API provider is the better choice. About ReplyKit.
