Chatbot for lead generation: website or WhatsApp, what it must capture, opening lines that start chats, and the best tools
This is for small businesses that get traffic or messages but not enough enquiries turning into customers. You will learn what a lead generation chatbot can honestly do, where to put it, the four things it must capture, opening lines you can copy, and how the main tools compare.
Quick answer
A chatbot for lead generation turns visitors and messages you already get into named enquiries with a need, a timeframe and a way to follow up. It does not create traffic. Put it where people already ask questions, usually your pricing page and WhatsApp, open with a specific line, capture four fields, and hand hot leads to a person fast.
Does a chatbot actually generate leads?
A chatbot converts attention you already have into leads; it does not bring new people to your site or your WhatsApp. If 30 people a day look at your pricing page and leave without a word, a chatbot can turn some of them into enquiries. If nobody visits, a chatbot changes nothing.
That distinction matters when you read vendor pages. A chatbot earns its keep in three ways:
- Catching the quiet visitor. Someone who would never fill a form will often type one question. The answer, plus one question back, is a lead.
- Replying at the moment of interest. An enquiry at 10pm answered at 10pm is worth more than the same enquiry answered at 9am. Our speed to lead guide has the research.
- Collecting the facts up front so the person who follows up knows the job, the budget and the timing before they call.
If you need more traffic or more messages first, start with free ways to get more WhatsApp leads or a click-to-WhatsApp ad, then add the chatbot.
Website chatbot or WhatsApp chatbot for lead generation?
Use a website chatbot to catch people who are browsing, and WhatsApp to catch people who are ready to talk. Most service businesses benefit from both, pointed at the same answers.
| Website chatbot | WhatsApp chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | Visitors still comparing options | People who already chose to message you |
| Contact details | You must ask for a name and number or email | You have the phone number from the first message |
| Follow-up | Visitor may close the tab and vanish | The chat stays on their phone, you can reply later |
| Typical traffic source | Search, ads to landing pages | Click-to-WhatsApp ads, Instagram, Google profile, QR codes |
| Main risk | Annoying pop-ups lower trust | Unofficial connections can be restricted; official API has per-message fees |
The strongest setup is often a website chat that answers the first question and then offers WhatsApp for the follow-up, so the lead lands in a channel where you can reach them again. We explain that pairing in do you need both a website assistant and a WhatsApp agent.
What should a lead generation chatbot capture?
Four fields: who, what, when, and how to reach them. Everything else can wait for the human follow-up. Every extra question costs some people who would have answered the first four.
| Field | Why you need it | How a good bot asks |
|---|---|---|
| Need | Tells you if it is a job you do and which price applies | "What are you looking to get done?" |
| Timing | The best single sign of how hot the lead is | "When are you hoping to start?" |
| Name | So the follow-up feels personal | "Who should I note this under?" |
| Contact | Website only: WhatsApp already has the number | "What's the best number to send the quote to?" |

Chatbot opening lines that start more conversations, by page
"Hi, how can I help you?" is the most common chatbot greeting and one of the weakest, because it makes the visitor do the work. Match the opener to the page. Copy and adapt these.
| Page or entry point | Opening line |
|---|---|
| Pricing page | "Prices depend on size. Tell me roughly what you need and I'll give you a figure now." |
| Service page (e.g. aircon servicing) | "How many units, and is it a service or a repair? I can check the next free slot." |
| Contact page | "Quickest way to a quote is right here. What's the job?" |
| Blog post | Stay quiet. Readers are learning, not buying. A small chat button is enough. |
| Click-to-WhatsApp ad | Answer the ad's offer directly: "The first consultation is $40. I have Thursday 3pm or Saturday 10am." |
| Instagram bio link | "Hi! Here's our price list. Which one caught your eye?" |
The prices and times above are placeholders.
Should you use a rules-based flow or an AI agent for lead capture?
Use a button flow if every lead follows the same three steps; use an AI agent if customers ask questions in their own words before they will give you anything. Most small service businesses are the second kind.
A flow builder (buttons, branches, "pick one of these") is predictable and cheap, and it works well for a single offer like a free consultation. It breaks when someone types "do you do weekends and how much for a 3-room flat" instead of pressing a button. An AI agent reads that sentence, answers both parts from your knowledge, and then asks the next question. The trade-off is that you must give it good content and check its answers in the first weeks. The full difference is in chatbot versus AI agent.
What is a lead generation chatbot worth? A worked example
Use your own numbers; these are placeholders for a hypothetical home cleaning company.
- Traffic. 2,000 website visitors a month, and 150 WhatsApp messages from new people.
- Today. 1% of visitors fill the form, so 20 form leads. WhatsApp messages answered within a few hours, and say a third go cold before a reply.
- Assumption. A chatbot on the pricing and service pages starts chats with another 1% of visitors who would not fill a form: 20 more conversations. Assume half give their details: 10 extra leads.
- WhatsApp. If instant replies keep even 10 of the 50 that used to go cold, that is 10 more live leads.
- Value. 20 extra leads, a 25% close rate, and a first job worth $120: 5 jobs, $600 a month, before any repeat business.
Every number above is an assumption to replace with your own. The useful part is the structure: if your version of step 5 is several times the tool's monthly price, it is worth a trial. Our chatbot ROI guide takes the same idea further.
Best chatbots for lead generation, compared
There is no single best tool; it depends on where your leads arrive and where they need to go afterwards. Prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026.
| Tool | Main channels | Free plan | Paid from (checked October 2026) | Strongest at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | Website chat, CRM | Free chatbot builder | Customer Agent $0.50 per resolved conversation (credits) | Leads land straight in a free CRM |
| Tidio | Website, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger | Yes, 50 conversations a month | $29 a month; Lyro AI from $39 a month | Online shops wanting one widget |
| ManyChat | Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok | Yes, 25 active contacts | $17 a month (Essential, monthly billing; varies by country) | Instagram comment and DM lead capture |
| Landbot | Website, WhatsApp | Yes, 100 chats a month | $45 a month (Starter, monthly billing); WhatsApp plan $220 a month | Visual button flows and lead forms |
| Intercom | Website, email, WhatsApp | No, 14-day trial | $29 per seat a month plus $0.99 per Fin outcome | Support-led companies with a team |
| tawk.to | Website chat | Yes, free for life with branding | AI Assist from $29 a month | Free live chat if a person can reply |
| ReplyKit | WhatsApp, website chat | 7-day trial, no card | $29 a month, AI included | WhatsApp leads, qualification and booking in one chat |
Two questions decide most choices. Where do your leads arrive: website, WhatsApp, Instagram? And where must they end up: a CRM that sales already uses, or a simple list a small team works through? A tool with deep CRM sync is worth paying more for if a sales team lives in that CRM. A small team usually does not need it.
Where ReplyKit fits for lead generation
We make ReplyKit, so weigh this accordingly. ReplyKit is an AI agent for WhatsApp and website chat. It answers from your own content (your website, PDFs, price lists, Q&A), asks for name, need, budget and timing naturally, scores each lead hot, warm or cold, and can book an appointment in the same chat. One line of code adds the website assistant, and both channels share one inbox and one leads list.
It suits a service business whose leads arrive on WhatsApp and the website and are followed up by a small team. Plans are $29, $49 and $99 a month with AI replies included; see pricing or start a 7-day free trial with no card.
It is not the best fit if you need leads synced into a CRM automatically (ReplyKit exports CSV only, with no Zapier, webhooks or native integrations), if your leads come mostly from Instagram or Messenger (not supported), or if you want to send campaigns to lists (ReplyKit only replies). WhatsApp connects through Quick Connect, which is unofficial QR pairing rather than the official API; read whether WhatsApp can ban your number before you choose it. Before pairing you see one plain notice, and pressing Connect is your acceptance of section 3 of our terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can a chatbot generate leads?
A chatbot converts visitors and messages you already get into leads. It does not create new traffic. It works by answering questions instantly and capturing a name, need, timing and contact details from people who would not fill in a form.
What is the best chatbot for lead generation?
It depends on where leads arrive. Website-first B2B teams often pick a tool with CRM sync, social-first sellers pick an Instagram and Messenger tool, and service businesses that live on WhatsApp pick a WhatsApp AI agent. Compare by channel first, then price.
Is a WhatsApp chatbot good for lead generation?
Yes, especially for service businesses. You get the customer's number from the first message and the conversation stays on their phone, so follow-up is easy. Pair it with click-to-WhatsApp ads or a QR code to bring people in.
What questions should a lead generation chatbot ask?
Start with what they need and when they need it, then their name, and on a website a contact number or email. Add budget only for larger jobs, and ask one question per message.
Are chatbot leads lower quality than form leads?
Not necessarily. A chatbot often catches people earlier, so some are less ready, but it also records what they need and when. Score them hot, warm or cold so your team calls the ready ones first.
Do I need a CRM for chatbot leads?
Not at the start. A small team can work from the chatbot's own lead list or a CSV export. A CRM integration becomes worth it when a dedicated sales team already works in a CRM every day.
