This guide is for owners of small businesses who want an AI chatbot that answers customers properly, not a toy that invents prices. You get a plain definition of "best", ten tools sorted by where your customers actually message you, a comparison table with prices checked October 2026, and a scorecard you can run during any free trial.

Quick answer

The best AI chatbot for a small business answers only from your own content, says so when it does not know, books appointments, hands chats to a person, and has a predictable monthly price. Pick by channel: Tidio or Intercom Fin if customers start on your website, Chatbase for a documentation bot, ReplyKit if they message you on WhatsApp and you take bookings.

What makes an AI chatbot the best one for a small business?

The best chatbot gives correct answers, in the channel your customers already use, at a cost you can predict. Five practical tests matter more than brand names.

1. Answers from your content

It reads your website, price list and FAQs and answers from them. A chatbot answering from the open internet will quote someone else's prices. Ask every vendor: where do the answers come from?

2. Says "I don't know"

When the answer is not in your content, it says so and passes the chat on. Guessing is the most expensive failure, and our hallucination explainer shows why it happens.

3. Books the next step

For clinics, salons, tutors and trades, the goal of most chats is an appointment. A chatbot that can offer real open times beats one that sends a link and hopes.

4. Hands over to a person

Complaints, refunds and unusual requests need you. Good tools alert you, pause the AI for that chat and let you reply from the same inbox.

5. A price you can predict

Watch for AI sold separately, per-seat pricing that multiplies with staff, per-resolution fees and credit multipliers. Our AI chatbot cost guide breaks the models down.

And: the right channel

A brilliant website bot is useless if your customers message you on WhatsApp, and the reverse. Start with where inquiries arrive today.

How do the top AI chatbots for small business compare?

Ten tools in three groups: website-first chatbots, WhatsApp-first agents, and general assistants that are not customer-facing at all. Prices are from each vendor's own pricing page, checked October 2026, in US dollars.

We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. We have tried to name each tool's real strengths and say plainly where another tool is the better choice.

Which AI chatbots are best for a small business website?

If most inquiries start on your website, choose a website-first tool. They are mature, integrate with stores and helpdesks, and most have a free or trial tier.

Tidio: live chat plus Lyro AI for online stores

Tidio combines live chat, ticketing, rule-based Flows and the Lyro AI agent, with strong ecommerce integrations. The catch is the meter: plans are priced by "billable conversations" (Starter 100, Growth from 250 at $59 a month up to 2,000), and Lyro is a separate subscription, from $39 a month for 50 AI conversations up to $700 for 1,000 when billed monthly. Tidio states on its pricing page that customers average a 75% Lyro resolution rate; that is the vendor's own figure. Full comparison: ReplyKit vs Tidio.

Intercom Fin: the strongest helpdesk AI, priced per outcome

Fin is a capable AI agent inside a full helpdesk, and it can also run on top of another helpdesk. Seats start at $29 (Essential), $85 (Advanced) and $132 (Expert) a month, and Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, charged once per conversation it resolves or routes. With an existing helpdesk there is a 50-outcome monthly minimum. Great for a support team; heavy for a three-person business. See ReplyKit vs Intercom Fin.

Chatbase: a flexible bot trained on your documents

Chatbase builds an AI agent from your files and site, with model choice and actions, which suits software products and knowledge portals. It no longer shows a free plan: Hobby is $40 a month ($32 billed yearly) for 700 message credits, Standard $150 for 4,000, Pro $500 for 15,000, and removing "Powered by Chatbase" is $1,188 a year. Stronger models use more credits per reply, so budget carefully. See ReplyKit vs Chatbase.

tawk.to: free live chat with a paid AI add-on

tawk.to's live chat, ticketing and knowledge base are free if you keep its branding (removal is $29 a month). AI Assist, its AI chatbot, starts at $29 a month, and the pricing page mentions a forever-free AI Assist plan "for sites with limited chat volume" without defining the limit. Best when a person is usually available to reply.

HubSpot and Botpress: for the CRM-first and the builders

HubSpot offers a free chatbot builder tied to its free CRM. Its AI Customer Agent needs a Professional or Enterprise edition and runs on HubSpot Credits at $0.50 per resolution. Botpress is a platform for building bots yourself: free for 100 conversations a month with three bots, Plus at $150 a month billed annually.

Which AI chatbots are best when customers message on WhatsApp?

In many countries the inquiry arrives on WhatsApp, not the website. Here you choose between a fast, unofficial connection with the AI included, or the official API with broadcasts and Meta fees. Our WhatsApp AI agent buyer's guide covers this group in depth.

ReplyKit: an AI agent for inbound leads and bookings

ReplyKit answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content, qualifies leads, offers real open slots and books them, and hands chats to you in one click. Plans are $29, $49 and $99 a month with AI replies included. It connects through Quick Connect, an unofficial QR pairing that is not the WhatsApp Business API and is not sanctioned by Meta, so a number can be restricted. Use a dedicated number. No broadcasts, no green tick.

WATI: official API workhorse

WATI gives you the official WhatsApp Business API, a team inbox, broadcasts and a no-code chatbot builder. In October 2026 the US pricing showed Growth at $69 a month ($59 billed annually), Pro at $149 ($119 annually) and Business at $349 ($279 annually), with the Astra AI agent as a separately priced add-on on Pro, plus Meta's message fees. See ReplyKit vs WATI.

respond.io: omnichannel for growing teams

respond.io pulls WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, email and more into one inbox with strong workflows. Starter is $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) without AI Agents; AI Agents start on Growth at $199 a month ($159 yearly). WhatsApp fees are not included.

Can I use ChatGPT as my business chatbot?

Not directly. ChatGPT is a general assistant for you, not a chatbot your customers talk to: no customer inbox, no booking, no handoff, and it does not know your prices unless you paste them in.

It is still useful for drafting replies and rewriting your FAQ. Copying customer questions into it and pasting answers back works until volume grows; our comparison of answering with ChatGPT manually versus an AI agent shows where that breaks.

How do I test an AI chatbot during a free trial?

Load the same content into two or three tools, ask each the same ten questions, and score them. One afternoon is enough, and it beats any review site, including this one.

TestWhat to ask or doScore 0 to 2
Price accuracy"How much is [your most common service]?"2 if exact, 0 if wrong
Unknown answerAsk something not in your content2 if it says it does not know and escalates, 0 if it guesses
Two questions at once"Do you open Sunday and do you take walk-ins?"2 if both answered
Booking"Can I come Thursday afternoon?"2 if it offers real times and books
Lead captureShow interest and see if it asks for your name and need2 if natural, 0 if a form dump
Handoff"I want to talk to a person"2 if you are alerted and can take over
LanguageAsk in a second language your customers use2 if it replies in that language
Voice note or photoSend one, if your channel allows it2 if understood
Setup timeTime from sign-up to first good answer2 if under an hour
Real monthly costPrice your actual volume, seats and add-ons2 if you can say the number

A score of 16 or more out of 20 is ready for customers. A zero on "unknown answer" is disqualifying. For a longer pre-launch checklist, see how to test your AI agent before going live.

Which AI chatbot should I choose for my situation?

Choose by where customers reach you and what the chat should end in.

Where ReplyKit fits, and where it does not

ReplyKit is built for one job: answering inbound inquiries for service businesses and turning them into booked appointments. One plan covers WhatsApp and a website assistant added with one line of code, each with its own instructions and knowledge, in one shared inbox with a leads CRM.

It is not the right choice if you need broadcasts or marketing messages, the official API or a green tick, Instagram or Messenger, a Shopify app, ticketing for a support team, or you cannot use a dedicated WhatsApp number. Safety limits cap AI replies at 30 an hour and 200 a day per number by default. You can start a 7-day trial with no card and run the scorecard above on your own content, or compare plans on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI chatbot for a small business?

The one that answers from your own content, admits when it does not know, books appointments, hands chats to you and has a predictable price. For website-first stores that is often Tidio or Intercom Fin; for service businesses whose customers use WhatsApp, ReplyKit.

Is there a free AI chatbot for small business?

Several tools have free tiers, but free AI is limited. Tidio's free plan includes 50 conversations and a one-off 50 Lyro AI conversations, Botpress is free for 100 conversations a month, and tawk.to's live chat is free with a paid AI add-on. Our free chatbot guide compares the limits.

How much does an AI chatbot cost for a small business?

Most small businesses pay between about $29 and $250 a month. Flat plans with AI included sit at the low end; per-seat helpdesks with per-resolution AI fees, such as $0.99 per Fin outcome, rise with volume and staff. Price your real monthly conversations, not the headline.

Can an AI chatbot book appointments?

Some can. Website tools often hand off to a booking link or integration. ReplyKit offers real open slots from your hours inside the chat, books them with double-booking protection and sends a reminder about 24 hours before.

Will an AI chatbot make things up?

It can if it answers from general knowledge. Choose a tool that answers only from your content and says it does not know otherwise, then test it with questions your content does not cover. A guess on price or policy is the failure to screen for.

Should my chatbot be on my website or on WhatsApp?

Wherever inquiries arrive today. Count last month's messages by channel. If most come through WhatsApp, a website bot alone will miss them. Some businesses need both.

How we know this. We checked every third-party price, free tier and trial in this guide on the vendor's own pricing page in October 2026; WATI's figures are its US pricing, which varies by region. ChatGPT's pricing page did not load for us, so we left its prices out. The scorecard is the one we use when we test our own agent against new content. We make ReplyKit and sell it, so weigh our view accordingly: for website-first stores, support teams and anyone who needs broadcasts or the official API, another tool on this list is the better choice, and for very low volumes no tool may be needed.
