Custom GPTs for business in 2026: who can still create one, OpenAI's plan to retire them, and what to use instead
If you have been told to "just build a custom GPT" for your business, the ground has moved. This explainer covers what a GPT is, which ChatGPT plans can still create one as of October 2026, what OpenAI has said about retiring them, and why a GPT was never a good fit for answering your customers on WhatsApp or your website.
Quick answer
A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT with your own instructions and up to 20 knowledge files. As of October 2026, OpenAI says personal plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) cannot create new GPTs, only Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces can, and it plans to retire GPTs in favor of Plugins. GPTs live inside ChatGPT, so they do not answer customers on your own channels.
What is a custom GPT?
A custom GPT is ChatGPT set up for one job: it has its own name, instructions, optional reference files and tools, and anyone you share it with can use it inside ChatGPT. It is configured, not programmed.
According to OpenAI's help article on creating and editing GPTs, the building blocks are:
| Part | What it does | Limits worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Name, description, conversation starters | How the GPT appears and how people start using it | Shown in shared links and the GPT Store |
| Instructions | Rules, tone and workflow applied to every conversation | OpenAI advises putting rules here, not in files |
| Knowledge | Files the GPT can draw from when answering | Up to 20 files, each up to 512 MB |
| Capabilities | Web search, image generation, canvas, code and data analysis, apps | Availability depends on account, workspace and region |
| Actions | Calls to external APIs that you define | A GPT can use apps or actions, not both at once |
Building is done on the web; the mobile apps can use GPTs but not create them.
Which ChatGPT plans can create a custom GPT?
Only Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, as of October 2026. OpenAI's help article states that new GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro.
| Plan | Create new GPTs | Use GPTs | Edit GPTs you already made |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free, Go, Plus, Pro (personal) | No | Yes | Yes, if plan and permissions allow |
| Business | Yes, if workspace settings allow | Yes | Yes |
| Enterprise, Edu | Yes, if workspace settings allow | Yes | Yes |
Two notes. First, OpenAI's pricing page still lists custom GPTs among the Plus plan's features when we checked; the help article is explicit that personal accounts cannot create new ones, so we read the pricing line as using GPTs. Second, the pricing page says Business plans start at two users, so a sole trader cannot get creation rights on a one-seat Business plan.
Are custom GPTs being retired?
Yes, according to OpenAI. Its help article says it is "planning to retire custom GPTs" and recommends moving workflows to Plugins, which combine reusable instructions with connected apps.
- Enterprise workspaces: retirement planned for 11 December 2026. Existing GPTs stay usable until then.
- Migration: a migration flow to Plugins was targeted for 17 September 2026 and may reach accounts at different times.
- Other plans: "expected to follow the same timeline", with notices to come.
If you are deciding today, this is the most important fact in the article: building a new business process on a custom GPT means planning a migration within months. Save your instructions and knowledge files somewhere you control, so you can move them to whatever you use next.
What is a custom GPT good for in a business?
Internal work, done by staff who already use ChatGPT. A GPT shines when the person using it is on your team and can judge the output.
Staff handbook helper
Upload your procedures and policies so staff can ask "how do we process a return?" instead of hunting through folders.
Proposal and quote drafter
Instructions with your pricing logic and tone, so a salesperson gets a first draft in your format.
Reply drafting assistant
Your tone rules and FAQ, so staff draft customer replies consistently. Our customer service prompts make a good starting set of instructions.
Content helper
Brand voice and product facts for writing social posts, product descriptions and emails.
On a Business workspace, OpenAI says it does not use workspace content for training by default, which makes it more suitable for internal documents than a personal account.
Can a custom GPT answer your customers?
Not well, and not where they are. A GPT lives inside ChatGPT, so customers must go to ChatGPT, open your GPT, and type there, instead of messaging you on WhatsApp or your website.
| What customer service needs | Custom GPT | Customer-facing AI agent |
|---|---|---|
| Answers on your WhatsApp number and website | No; it runs in ChatGPT | Yes |
| Customer needs no extra account or app | Depends on ChatGPT's own access rules | Yes; they message as usual |
| You see every conversation | No; chats sit in each user's ChatGPT history | Yes, in a shared inbox |
| Hand over to a person mid-chat | No | Yes |
| Book appointments, capture leads | Only with custom actions you build | Built in, depending on product |
| Long-term availability | Retirement announced | Depends on the vendor |
There is also a policy question if you try to wire a general AI assistant into WhatsApp yourself: since 15 January 2026, Meta permits "AI Providers" to offer general-purpose AI assistants on the WhatsApp Business Platform only where it is legally required to, per its developer page. A business answering questions about its own services is a different case, explained in our guide to the rule.
How do you move a custom GPT before it is retired?
Copy out everything that makes it yours, while you can still open the editor. The GPT itself will not move; its parts will.
- Copy the instructions into a plain document. These are the most valuable part and work, with light editing, in almost any AI tool.
- Download or locate the original knowledge files. Keep the source versions, not just what you uploaded, and note which are out of date.
- List the conversation starters. They are a ready-made list of the questions people ask, which doubles as a test set.
- Write down any actions and the APIs they call, including how they authenticate, so a developer can rebuild them.
- Note who uses it and for what. If customers or outside partners use it, tell them where to go next before it stops working.
- Test the replacement against the old GPT with the same ten questions before switching people over.
If the GPT was answering customers, this is a good moment to move that job to a tool that runs on your own channels rather than recreating it inside ChatGPT.
Alternatives, by job
Pick by who will be typing: your staff or your customers.
| Job | Sensible option | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Internal helper on a Business workspace | OpenAI's Plugins, the replacement OpenAI recommends | Per-user pricing; check what your plan includes |
| Drafting replies, one person | Plain ChatGPT with saved prompts | Turn off model training on personal plans; redact customer details |
| Answering customers on WhatsApp and website | A customer-facing AI agent | How it connects to WhatsApp, and what it does when it does not know |
| Website-only chatbot on your documents | A website chatbot builder; see Chatbase alternatives | How many messages each plan includes, and whether it covers WhatsApp |
| Something fully custom, with your own systems | Build on an AI model's API | Developer time and upkeep; see buy versus build |
ReplyKit as the customer-facing alternative
ReplyKit covers the customer-facing row. It is an AI agent that answers your WhatsApp number and your website chat from your own content: crawl your website, upload PDFs and price lists, add Q&A pairs or a product catalog CSV. Like a GPT, it has instructions and knowledge; unlike a GPT, customers reach it where they already message you, you see every chat in one inbox, and you can take over with one click. It books real open slots, scores leads hot, warm or cold, and lists the questions it could not answer so you can teach it once.
WhatsApp connects through Quick Connect, an unofficial QR pairing: it is not the WhatsApp Business API, Meta does not sanction it, and a number can be restricted, so we recommend a dedicated number and enforce reply limits. Plans are $29, $49 and $99 a month (compare plans), and you can move your GPT's instructions and files across in an afternoon on a free 7-day trial.
When ReplyKit is not the right fit: for internal staff tools, a workplace AI product is better. For broadcasts, Instagram or Messenger, or the official API, use a platform built on the official API.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still create a custom GPT on ChatGPT Plus?
No, according to OpenAI's help center as of October 2026: new GPT creation and publishing are not available on personal accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. You can still use GPTs and edit ones you made before, where your plan allows.
Are custom GPTs going away?
OpenAI says it plans to retire custom GPTs and recommends moving to Plugins. Retirement is planned for 11 December 2026 for affected Enterprise workspaces, and other plans are expected to follow the same timeline.
How many files can a custom GPT use?
Up to 20 files, each up to 512 MB, according to OpenAI's help article. OpenAI recommends clear, text-based files and putting rules in the instructions rather than in the files.
Can I put a custom GPT on my website or WhatsApp?
A GPT runs inside ChatGPT and is shared by link or through the GPT Store, so customers would have to use it there. To answer customers on your own website and WhatsApp, you need a customer-facing chatbot or agent connected to those channels.
Is a custom GPT private?
You choose who it is shared with, and on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces OpenAI says content is not used for training by default. Anyone who can use the GPT may be able to get it to reveal parts of its instructions or files, so do not put confidential information in it.
What is the best alternative to a custom GPT for customer service?
A customer-facing AI agent that answers on your WhatsApp and website from your own content, hands over to a person when unsure, and keeps every conversation in your inbox. Compare a few on price, how they connect to WhatsApp and how they handle unknown questions.
Move your GPT's knowledge to where customers actually message you
An AI agent on your WhatsApp and website, with your instructions and files. 7-day free trial, 300 AI replies, no credit card.
