Quick answer

About half of US adults (49%) used AI chatbots in early 2026, up from 33% in 2024 (Pew Research Center), and ChatGPT alone had more than 1.2 billion weekly users by October 2026 (OpenAI). Business use lags: 19.8% of US firms used AI in May 2026 (US Census Bureau). Company chatbots are underused: only 7% of customers used one in their latest service interaction (Gartner, 2026).

How many people use AI chatbots in 2026?

About half of American adults, and a daily habit for a quarter. Pew Research Center's survey of 5,119 US adults (17 to 23 February 2026) is the most careful public measure:

Globally, OpenAI said on 7 October 2026 that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. That is the company's own count.

What it means for a small business: your customers now know what a good chatbot answer feels like. A scripted bot that only offers "press 1 for prices" will look old next to the AI they use every day.

How many businesses actually use AI?

Fewer than the headlines suggest, especially small ones. The US Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey is the closest thing to a national census of business AI use:

StatisticSource, date
19.8% of US firms used AI as of 3 May 2026; between 17% and 20% over December 2025 to May 2026US Census Bureau, May 2026
20% to 23% of firms expected to use AI within six monthsUS Census Bureau, May 2026
37% of firms with 250 or more employees used AI; fewer than 20% of firms with four or fewer employees didUS Census Bureau, May 2026
About 14% of retail businesses used AI, against 39.7% in the information sectorUS Census Bureau, May 2026
40% of respondents from organizations with revenue over $1 billion report scaling AI agents, up from 27%; smaller organizations flat at 22%McKinsey, The state of AI in 2026, August 2026
80% of respondents say AI has improved their individual productivity; 37% attribute at least some EBIT impact to AIMcKinsey, August 2026
What it means: most small businesses have not deployed AI yet, so a fast, accurate chatbot is still a way to stand out rather than a way to catch up. McKinsey surveys mostly larger organizations and its respondents are executives, so treat its figures as a view from the top.

Why do customers skip company chatbots?

Because many have been burned. Gartner's survey of 3,566 B2B and B2C customers, run in February and March 2026, found a large gap between willingness and use:

An older Brazilian survey shows the same pattern on WhatsApp: in Mobile Time and Opinion Box's August 2022 survey of 2,073 smartphone users, nine in ten WhatsApp users had talked to a company's service bot, and their average satisfaction score was 3.2 out of 5.

What it means: the problem is not that people refuse to talk to bots; it is that company bots have been bad. A chatbot that cannot answer, loops, or hides the human costs you the customer's next attempt too. Our checklist on why AI customer service feels bad covers the fixes, and why an agent should say "I am not sure" covers the most important one.

How fast are chatbots growing inside messaging apps?

Faster than on websites, if Meta's numbers are a guide. On its April 2026 earnings call Meta said more than 10 million conversations a week were facilitated through its Business AIs, up from 1 million at the start of the year. By July 2026 it said more than 1 million businesses were using Meta Business Agents each week on WhatsApp and Messenger, and that WhatsApp was already the leading surface where people engage with Meta AI. These are Meta's own figures. For the wider WhatsApp picture, see our WhatsApp Business statistics.

What it means: customers will meet AI in the chat apps they already use. If your customers message you on WhatsApp, that is where a chatbot will be judged, not on your website. Our chatbot vs AI agent explainer shows the difference between a menu bot and an agent that can book.

What do customer service leaders expect chatbots to become?

The most valuable service channel, within two years. In Gartner's survey of 199 service and support leaders (April to May 2026), respondents predicted GenAI chatbots will become the most valuable customer service channel in two years' time, followed by live chat and GenAI voicebots. The same survey found leaders' AI spending up 38% while overall service budgets grew 2% (Gartner, August 2026).

Read that next to the customer data above: leaders are betting heavily on chatbots that customers currently underuse. The businesses that win will be the ones whose bots actually resolve things. For the service-team view in more depth, see our AI customer service statistics.

Which chatbot statistics did we exclude, and why?

What should a small business take from these chatbot numbers?

  1. Customers are ready for AI; they are not ready for bad bots. Half of adults use chatbots, yet only 7% used a company bot in their last service interaction.
  2. Accuracy beats coverage. A bot that answers from your real prices and admits when it does not know earns a second try. One that guesses does not.
  3. Always show the way to a person. The fear of being trapped is what keeps customers away.
  4. Go where the conversation already is. For many small businesses that is WhatsApp, not a website pop-up.
