AI voice agent vs AI chat agent for a small business: what each costs, how accurate each is, and when to use which

This is for owners deciding whether to put AI on the phone line, in WhatsApp and website chat, or both. You will get verified prices on the same page, a worked monthly bill for a hypothetical clinic, the accuracy trade-offs nobody puts on a pricing page, and a simple decision table.

Quick answer

An AI voice agent answers phone calls and is usually billed per minute or per call; an AI chat agent answers WhatsApp or website messages and is usually a flat monthly plan. Chat is cheaper per enquiry and more accurate on names, dates and numbers. Voice is the right choice when your customers phone, especially older customers and urgent jobs.

What is the difference between an AI voice agent and an AI chat agent?

An AI voice agent talks on the phone; an AI chat agent types in a messaging app or website chat. Both use the same kind of AI to understand a request and decide what to do. The voice agent adds two extra steps: turning speech into text on the way in, and text into speech on the way out.

Those two steps change almost everything else: the cost (you pay for every minute of audio), the speed (a call cannot be answered in pieces), and the error rate on details like names. They also change what the customer has afterwards. A chat leaves a written record on the customer's phone; a call leaves only memory unless the agent sends a text or email.

If you have not used either yet, the plain-English starting points are what a WhatsApp AI agent is and the AI receptionist explained.

How much does an AI voice agent cost compared with a chat agent?

Voice agents usually charge by the minute, by the call or by the caller. Chat agents usually charge a flat monthly fee with an allowance of replies or conversations. These are list prices checked on each vendor's own page in October 2026.

ToolTypeHow it chargesEntry price

Intercom FinChat AIPer outcome plus seats$0.99 per Fin outcome, seats from $29

The platforms (Retell, Vapi, Bland) are building blocks: someone has to design the call flow and connect it to your calendar. The ready-made receptionists are set up for you but cost more per call. That same split exists in chat, and our no-code AI agent builder guide covers it.

A worked monthly bill: voice versus chat for the same enquiries

Take a hypothetical physiotherapy clinic with 400 new enquiries a month. These assumptions are ours, so swap in your own numbers.

OptionHow the bill works outMonthly estimate
Retell AI (build it yourself)1,200 minutes at the calculator's $0.11 example rate, plus a $2 numberAbout $134, plus build time
Rosie1,200 minutes fits the 2,000-minute Growth plan$299
Goodcall350 unique callers fits the Growth plan (500 included)$129
Smith.ai AI Receptionist400 calls: the 300-call tier plus 100 calls at $2.17About $717
ReplyKit2,000 replies fits Growth (5,000 included)$49

Chat is cheaper per enquiry for a structural reason: text costs far less to process than audio, and there is no phone line to pay for. But the cheapest channel is worthless if your patients will not use it. A clinic whose patients are mostly over 70 might rightly pay for voice.

Which is more accurate, an AI voice agent or a chat agent?

Chat is more accurate on the details that make or break a booking: names, phone numbers, dates and addresses. Voice adds a speech recognition step that can mishear, and the caller cannot see what the agent understood.

Where voice slips

Spelling names ("Lim" or "Lin"), long numbers, addresses, background noise, strong accents, callers who interrupt, and silence while someone checks their diary. Good voice agents read details back, which adds time to every call.

Where chat slips

Very short or ambiguous messages ("ok", "tmr?"), slang and mixed languages, and customers who send several questions at once. These are easier to recover from because both sides can scroll back. See how agents handle slang and typos.

Chat also handles things voice cannot: a photo of a rash, a damaged part or a nail design, and a link to a map. Many chat agents understand voice notes too, which gives customers who prefer speaking a middle option without a live call.

Do customers prefer to call or message a business?

It depends heavily on age and country, and many customers are wary of AI in either channel. Plan for both preferences rather than forcing one.

One practical point: an AI voice agent that answers inbound calls is different from one that makes outbound calls. In the US, the FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" under the robocall law, so outbound AI calls need the same prior consent as prerecorded ones.

When should a small business use a voice agent, a chat agent, or both?

Follow your customers: look at where your last 50 enquiries came from and how many you missed in each channel.

Most enquiries arrive on WhatsApp or the websiteChat agentCheapest per enquiry, writes everything down, books in the thread

Even split, budget availableBoth, sharing one knowledge baseEach customer uses the channel they prefer

Can you route phone callers to a chat agent instead?

Yes, partly. Many businesses change their voicemail or phone greeting to say "for prices and bookings, message us on WhatsApp at this number and you'll get an answer straight away". Routine callers switch; urgent ones stay on the line.

This works best when the chat reply really is instant. We compare this approach with phone menus in AI agent versus a phone IVR menu, and with automatic texts after a missed call in missed call text back versus a WhatsApp AI agent.

Where ReplyKit fits: chat only, by design

We make ReplyKit, so weigh this accordingly. ReplyKit is a chat agent for WhatsApp and website chat. It answers from your own content, understands voice notes and photos on every plan, replies in over 30 languages, qualifies leads and books appointments into real open slots with a reminder the day before. Plans are $29, $49 and $99 a month with AI replies included (see pricing).

ReplyKit does not answer phone calls and does not send missed-call texts. If most of your customers phone, a voice agent from the table above, or a human answering service, is the better choice, and ReplyKit can sit alongside it for the people who message. WhatsApp connects through Quick Connect, an unofficial QR pairing rather than the official API, which Meta does not sanction; read whether WhatsApp can ban your number. Before pairing you see one plain notice, and pressing Connect is your acceptance of section 3 of our terms. If chat suits your customers, try it free for 7 days with no card.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI voice agent better than a chatbot?

Neither is better in general. A voice agent suits customers who phone, especially older customers and urgent jobs. A chat agent is cheaper per enquiry, more accurate on names and numbers, and suits customers who message on WhatsApp or your website.

How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?

On the platforms we checked in October 2026, from about $0.05 to $0.31 a minute depending on the provider, voice and AI model, plus phone number and telephony costs. Ready-made AI receptionists instead charge per call, per caller or by included minutes.

Are AI voice agents accurate?

They handle simple requests well but are more error-prone than chat on names, numbers and addresses, because speech must be converted to text first. Noise, accents and interruptions add errors. Good voice agents read key details back to the caller.

Do customers like talking to AI on the phone?

Many are wary of AI in any channel. A 2024 Gartner survey found 64% of customers would prefer companies not use AI for customer service. Offering an easy transfer to a person matters more than whether the AI is on voice or chat.

Can I use an AI voice agent and a chat agent together?

Yes. Many businesses use a voice agent or a phone greeting for callers and a chat agent for WhatsApp and website messages, both drawing on the same prices and policies. Keep the knowledge in one place so answers match.

Does ReplyKit answer phone calls?

No. ReplyKit is a chat agent for WhatsApp and website chat. It understands voice notes sent in WhatsApp, but it does not answer calls or send missed-call texts.

How we know this. We build a chat agent, not a voice agent, and we have set out where that is the wrong choice. Voice and chat prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026; the worked bill uses our own stated assumptions, not customer data. The YouGov and Gartner research and the FCC release were read at the source. We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. If most of your customers phone, a voice agent or a human answering service is the better choice. About ReplyKit.
