WhatsApp Business App versus WhatsApp Business Platform (the API): two different products with the same name, explained

"WhatsApp Business" means two things. The app on your phone, free, with a profile and quick replies. And the Business Platform, an API that developers and large companies integrate, with approvals, templates and per-message fees. They do not talk to each other, and a number lives on one or the other. Knowing which one you are on explains most of what you can and cannot do.

Quick answer

The WhatsApp Business App is the free phone app for small businesses: a business profile, catalogue, quick replies, labels, greeting and away messages, and up to a handful of linked devices. The WhatsApp Business Platform is Meta's API for programmatic messaging: it needs a Meta business account and approval, uses approved templates for outbound messages, charges per message, and is what large companies and campaign tools use. A number is registered on one or the other, not both. Third-party agents either use the Platform (sanctioned, fees) or pair with the app as a linked device (instant, not sanctioned).

Which one are you on?

If you registered the number in an app on a phone and you can see chats there, you are on the app. If a provider onboarded you through a Meta business account, you send templates and you receive a monthly bill for messages, you are on the Platform. A number cannot be on both; moving from app to Platform migrates the number and you lose the app's chat history on the phone.

Automation on each

On the Platform, automation is the point: any software can send and receive through the API within the rules. On the app, Meta's built-in options are limited to greeting, away and quick replies, plus Meta's own Business Agent where available. Some third-party tools automate the app by pairing as a linked device, the way WhatsApp Web does; that is not sanctioned and can get a number restricted. ReplyKit runs on the platform instead. That is ReplyKit's route, and the trade-off is laid out in Why ReplyKit uses the official platform.

ReplyKit connects your number through Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform. You sign in with your Facebook business account from the dashboard, pick or create the number, and it is live in a few minutes: no pairing, no phone that has to stay online, and no linked-device restriction risk. Replies to customers who message you carry no Meta fee inside the 24-hour service window; reminders and follow-ups sent outside it go as approved templates at Meta's per-message rate. Details in why ReplyKit runs on the official platform.

When to move to the Platform

Most small businesses do not need an enterprise provider; a done-for-you agent on a dedicated number on the same platform is the practical choice. Both products are governed by the same Business Messaging Policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WhatsApp Business App and WhatsApp Business Platform?

The app is the free phone app for small businesses. The Platform is Meta's paid API for programmatic messaging used by larger companies and tool vendors.

Can a number be on both?

No. A number is registered on one or the other.

Is the WhatsApp Business Platform free?

No. Meta charges per message by category and country, on top of any provider fee.

How do third-party AI agents work with WhatsApp?

Properly, through the WhatsApp Business Platform, which is what ReplyKit uses. Some tools instead pair with the app as a linked device, which is not sanctioned and gets numbers restricted.

Do I need the Platform for an AI agent?

Yes, for any sanctioned automation. A done-for-you tool like ReplyKit connects you to it in minutes without a developer.
