tawk.to pricing: what stays free, what AI Assist costs per reply, and when you start paying
tawk.to is famous for free live chat, and that is still true. What changed is everything around it: an AI agent sold in credit-based plans, a white-label add-on, and new voice and data add-ons. This guide is for website owners deciding whether to pay for any of it, using prices from tawk.to's own pages and help center checked on 25 October 2026.

What is free on tawk.to?
The core platform is free with no time limit and no per-seat fees: live chat, an omnichannel inbox, ticketing, a knowledge base, chat pages, contacts and pipeline. tawk.to says 99% of its businesses never pay.
The free inbox can take conversations from the tawk.to widget, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, SMS, email and Instagram, according to tawk.to's own site summary. The knowledge base and ticketing are also free. What you do not get free is an AI agent beyond a small monthly allowance, removal of the "Powered by tawk.to" badge, and the newer voice and data add-ons. What are tawk.to's paid add-ons?
tawk.to lists four software add-ons, each billed per property (one website or brand), not per agent, and each can be switched off any time.

How much does tawk.to AI Assist cost?
AI Assist has four plans. Hobby is free, Growth is $29 a month, Business $99 and Enterprise $399, with yearly billing at ten times the monthly price.

Each plan also caps the characters of training content: 500,000 on Hobby, 4 million on Growth, 8 million on Business and 12 million on Enterprise. Growth adds overages and ticket support, Business adds assisted setup and chat support, and Enterprise adds a dedicated account manager and round-the-clock support by email, chat and phone. You pay by card or PayPal, and plan changes take effect at the next billing date.
How many AI replies do you actually get?
Fewer than the credit numbers suggest. tawk.to's help center says the default Auto model uses 3 credits per AI reply, and other models show their own cost in the model menu. So 1,000 credits is about 333 replies on Auto.

Three more rules from tawk.to's billing articles:
- Voice notes cost extra: transcription uses 1 credit per started minute of speech, up to 5 per voice message, on top of the reply.
- Bought credits roll over: extra credits cost $30 per 1,000, are sold in blocks of 1,000, only on paid plans, and do not expire. Plan credits reset each period. Auto top-up can buy more when you fall below a threshold.
- Running out: AI Assist keeps going in existing conversations but stops joining new ones until you buy credits or your allowance resets. Any excess is deducted from your next balance.
Can you still hire people through tawk.to?
tawk.to's "Why free" page still describes hired chat agents at $1 an hour and virtual assistants from $7 an hour, and its services pages list virtual assistants from $7.50 an hour. The add-ons page no longer lists hired chat agents among its software add-ons, so confirm current availability and terms with tawk.to before planning around them.
What does WhatsApp cost on tawk.to?
Connecting WhatsApp to the tawk.to inbox is free, but WhatsApp runs on Meta's official platform, so Meta's message charges apply to your WhatsApp Business account. tawk.to's guide requires a WhatsApp Business Account set up through Meta Business Manager and a number registered with the WhatsApp Business API, and supports Meta's coexistence option so you can keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number.
Under Meta's pricing, each business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month since 1 October 2026, then service replies are charged by country, and template messages are charged on delivery. If AI Assist answers on WhatsApp, its replies use credits and count as service messages.
What would a month on tawk.to cost? Two worked bills
Both are hypothetical, on monthly billing, using the Auto model.
A local service business with one website
- Free chat, inbox and ticketing: $0.
- AI Assist Growth for after-hours answers: $29, which covers about 333 replies.
- The AI actually sends 450 replies a month, using 1,350 credits, so buy 1,000 extra credits once: $30. The unused 650 roll over and cover next month's shortfall.
- Whitelabel to remove the badge: $29.
Total: $88 in the first month, then about $58 to $88 depending on how quickly the rolled-over credits are used. Without white-labeling, $59 in the first month.
An online retailer with two store websites
- Add-ons are per property, so AI Assist Business on each site: 2 × $99 = $198, about 3,300 replies in total.
- Whitelabel on both: 2 × $29 = $58.
- Customers send voice notes on WhatsApp: 300 a month at an average 2 credits each for transcription = 600 credits, about 200 fewer replies.
Total: about $256 a month, plus any Meta charges above the free service messages. Yearly billing would cut the AI Assist part from $2,376 to $1,980 a year.
Is paying for tawk.to worth it?
The free platform is excellent value for any team that will be online to answer chats, and white-labeling at $29 is optional. AI Assist is fairly priced per reply, roughly 6 to 9 cents on the Auto model, but the per-property billing adds up for businesses with several sites, and the credit arithmetic makes the Growth plan smaller than it looks.
