respond.io vs ManyChat: Instagram growth tool or WhatsApp team inbox?
If you are weighing respond.io against ManyChat, you are probably trying to automate DMs and WhatsApp without hiring. The two look similar on a feature list but are built for different jobs. ManyChat is a growth tool for Instagram comments and DMs that can also run WhatsApp, and respond.io is a team inbox for WhatsApp that can also run Instagram. Here is how to tell which job you have.
Quick answer
ManyChat is the better buy if Instagram drives your leads and a small team handles replies: Pro costs about $39 a month for 2,500 active contacts, with AI replies and WhatsApp included. respond.io is the better buy if WhatsApp is your main channel and several people work the inbox, from $199 a month for Growth with 10 users and AI agents. WhatsApp message fees are extra on both.
Two different jobs: growth automation versus a team inbox
ManyChat turns social attention into conversations; respond.io helps a team manage those conversations once they arrive. Most of the confusion between them comes from the overlap in the middle.
- ManyChat's core is the Instagram comment-to-DM funnel: someone comments a keyword on your reel, ManyChat sends them a DM with a link or a question, and a flow captures their email or WhatsApp number. It does the same on Facebook Messenger, TikTok and WhatsApp.
- respond.io's core is the shared inbox: WhatsApp and other channels in one place, routing to the right person, lead stages, workflows that follow up, and an AI agent that answers before a human picks up.
What you pay on each, plan by plan
ManyChat is much cheaper at the entry level. respond.io costs more because the plan includes more users and a heavier inbox.
| ManyChat plan | Monthly / billed yearly | Active contacts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 25 | Two channels, ManyChat branding |
| Essential | About $17 / $14 | 250 | No WhatsApp, SMS or email channel |
| Pro | About $39 / $29 | 2,500 | WhatsApp, AI replies, broadcasts |
| Business | About $99 / $69 | 7,500 | Shared team inbox, unlimited channels |
| Advanced | About $199 / $139 | 25,000 | API access, larger team |

| respond.io plan | Monthly / billed yearly | Users | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $99 / $79 | 5 | No AI agent, no broadcasts |
| Growth | $199 / $159 (1,000 contacts) | 10 | AI agents, broadcasts, workflows |
| Advanced | $349 / $279 (1,000 contacts) | 10 | Webhooks, HTTP requests, SSO |

Active contacts mean different money on each
Both tools bill by monthly active contacts, but ManyChat's allowance is 2.5 times larger on its $39 plan than respond.io's on its $199 plan. The trade-off is what each contact gets you.
On ManyChat, going over your allowance does not stop automations; extra contacts are billed at a per-contact rate that falls on higher plans, about $0.05 each on Pro monthly. Broadcast recipients count as active, so a promotion to 4,000 followers makes 4,000 people active that month. On respond.io, you choose a contact tier with the plan, and contacts above it are billed at $12 per 100 on Growth, which is $0.12 each.
So at the same contact count, ManyChat is cheaper. respond.io earns its price through the inbox: 10 users included, routing, lead lifecycle stages and workflows built for a sales or support team.
WhatsApp depth: where ManyChat stops
Both connect WhatsApp through the official Business API and charge Meta's message fees on top. ManyChat is fine for WhatsApp flows and broadcasts; respond.io goes further for teams.
- ManyChat needs Pro or above for WhatsApp. Message charges come out of the ManyChat Wallet at per-country rates; our pricing guide found its marketing and utility rates running about 15% above Meta's list in October 2026, with service messages at Meta's rate.
- respond.io takes WhatsApp charges from a credit balance you top up, and its workflows, assignment rules and multiple numbers are designed for teams running WhatsApp as the main channel.
On both, Meta's rules apply: since 1 October 2026 service replies are charged after 1,000 free per number each month, and Meta does not currently deliver marketing templates to US numbers. Our WhatsApp vs Instagram DM vs Messenger guide helps if you are still deciding which channel to lead with.
AI replies compared
ManyChat includes AI replies from Pro, inside its flows. respond.io includes full AI agents from Growth, under a credit allowance with fair use.
ManyChat's AI is strongest as a step inside a flow: understand the intent of a DM, answer a common question, collect a detail, then continue the funnel. respond.io's AI agent works more like a first-line team member: it answers from your knowledge, qualifies, and assigns the chat to a person with context. If you want free-form answers to anything a customer types, test both with real questions during the trials; the difference between a flow chatbot and an AI agent is bigger than any feature list suggests.
A fitness studio's month on both
A hypothetical boutique fitness studio runs Instagram reels with a "TRIAL" keyword, and members message on WhatsApp to book and ask questions. Two people handle replies. About 1,800 people are active across channels in a month. Monthly billing, before WhatsApp message fees.
| Line | ManyChat Pro | respond.io Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | About $39 (2,500 contacts) | $199 (1,000 contacts) |
| Extra contacts | None needed | 8 blocks of 100 at $12 = $96 |
| Users | 3 included, enough for two | 10 included |
| AI | Included | Included under fair use |
| Platform total | About $39 | $295 |
For this studio ManyChat is the clear pick, because Instagram is the lead source and the team is small. The picture changes for a clinic group with eight front-desk staff, three WhatsApp numbers and no Instagram funnel: there, respond.io's included users and routing do work ManyChat's plans are not designed for.

If you only answer WhatsApp enquiries
We build ReplyKit, a narrower tool than both, so take this section with that in mind. If your job is answering people who message your WhatsApp or website, booking them in and flagging hot leads, ReplyKit does that from $29 a month with AI replies included and no Meta fees.
It has clear limits. It connects by QR code as a linked device, which is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta, so a number can be restricted; use a dedicated number. It does not do Instagram, Messenger, broadcasts or comment funnels, which is exactly where ManyChat shines. A common setup is ManyChat on Instagram sending people to WhatsApp, where an agent answers. You can try ReplyKit free for 7 days to see if that half is enough.
