RCS vs WhatsApp for business: what RCS actually is, whether it reaches iPhones, what it costs, and which one suits your market
RCS is being sold as "WhatsApp-style messaging without the app". That is half true. This explainer covers what RCS business messaging is, where it works today (including iPhones), how it is priced, and an honest market-by-market view of when RCS beats WhatsApp and when it does not.
Quick answer
RCS for Business sends branded, verified, rich messages into a phone's default texting app, on Android and on iPhones running iOS 18 where the carrier supports it, and falls back to SMS elsewhere. WhatsApp needs the app but dominates in much of Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. In SMS-first markets like the US, RCS is the natural upgrade; elsewhere, WhatsApp usually wins.
What is RCS business messaging?
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the carrier standard that upgrades SMS with chat features: typing indicators, read receipts, high-quality media and longer messages, inside the phone's built-in texting app. RCS business messaging is the business version, which Google now calls "RCS for Business" (formerly RCS Business Messaging, or RBM). Google describes it as a way for brands to message customers with their branding, rich media, read receipts and analytics, and a "Verified" badge so customers know the sender is real.
The practical difference from WhatsApp is distribution. RCS arrives in the default messages app, so customers need no extra app, and when a phone or carrier does not support RCS, providers can automatically fall back to SMS. WhatsApp needs the customer to have WhatsApp, but in most of the world they already do.
Scale is real in the US: Google said in May 2025 that more than a billion RCS messages are sent every day in the US alone, averaged over 28 days. That figure covers all RCS chats, mostly person to person, not just business messages.
Does RCS business messaging work on iPhone?
Partly, and it depends on the carrier. Apple's support page says RCS on iPhone needs iOS 18 and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone (end-to-end encrypted RCS needs iOS 26.5 and a supporting carrier). For business messages specifically, Google's RCS for Business troubleshooting guide says Apple has its own implementation of RCS and "its own choice of carriers for RCS/RBM launches on iOS", and refers questions about availability to Apple.
- Android: broadly supported through Google Messages, subject to carrier and country launch.
- iPhone: works on iOS 18 or later only where Apple and the carrier have enabled business RCS. Check your provider's coverage list for each country and carrier.
- Everyone else: receives the SMS fallback, if your provider sends one, without the branding, buttons or media.
So for a business, "RCS reaches iPhones" means "some iPhones, in some countries, on some carriers". Plan your messages so the SMS fallback still makes sense on its own.
How is RCS business messaging priced?
Through carriers and providers, not by one public price list. Google's billing documentation describes the events that can be charged, but publishes no prices; carriers set charges and providers add their own.
| Billing event (Google's standard model) | What it means |
|---|---|
| Basic message | A business message with only text, 160 characters or fewer |
| Single message | A business message with rich content, or text over 160 characters |
| A2P conversation | Starts when the customer replies to a business message within 24 hours; covers the messages in that window (conversational agents) |
| P2A conversation | Starts when the business replies to a customer's message within 24 hours (conversational agents) |
The US runs on a separate billing model. As a concrete example, Twilio's US price page lists RCS rich text at $0.0083 per segment and RCS rich media at $0.022 per outbound message, plus carrier fees added per message (for example $0.0045 for an outbound rich message on AT&T and $0.0062 on T-Mobile), and notes that RCS senders launching on US carriers are subject to carrier onboarding fees. Outside the US, AWS, for one, lists RCS for Business in 22 countries as of May 2026, with pricing that varies by destination.
What does each cost to send 1,000 appointment reminders?
A worked example for a US business, using list prices checked in October 2026. Both exclude the provider's monthly fees.
| RCS via Twilio (US) | WhatsApp via the official API (US) | |
|---|---|---|
| Per reminder | $0.0083 rich text + $0.0045 to $0.0062 carrier fee | $0.0034 Meta utility rate, plus your provider's markup if any |
| 1,000 reminders | About $12.80 to $14.50 | About $3.40 to Meta |
| Who receives it | Anyone with a phone; RCS where supported, SMS fallback elsewhere (SMS priced separately) | Only customers who have WhatsApp |
| Setup | Brand and agent verification, carrier launch and onboarding fees | Meta business verification and approved templates |
Per message, WhatsApp is cheaper for this reminder in the US. But reach decides the real cost: Pew Research Center found in 2025 that 32% of US adults use WhatsApp, so two thirds of a US customer list may never see the WhatsApp reminder. In the US, RCS (or plain SMS) usually wins on reach. Marketing flips the per-message maths too: Meta's US marketing rate is $0.025 per message. Our WhatsApp vs SMS guide covers the SMS side.
Which wins in which market, RCS or WhatsApp?
Follow your customers' habits. In the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2025, WhatsApp was used weekly by 77% of the online sample in Spain, 73% in Malaysia, 71% in Brazil, 69% in India and 80% in Nigeria. In those markets customers expect WhatsApp, and an RCS message from an unfamiliar sender competes with that habit.
| Market type | Examples | Better first channel | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMS-first, low WhatsApp use | United States | RCS with SMS fallback | Reaches every phone; 32% of US adults use WhatsApp |
| WhatsApp-first | Spain, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa | Most customers already message businesses there | |
| Messenger-first | The Philippines | Facebook Messenger, then the others | Messenger far outranks WhatsApp; see our Philippines guide |
| Mixed, iPhone-heavy | Markets where iPhone share is high and carrier RCS support is patchy | Test both | Business RCS on iPhone depends on Apple and the carrier |
One more distinction: RCS for Business is mostly a business-initiated channel (alerts, reminders, promotions, with replies possible). WhatsApp is where customers start conversations themselves, from a website button, a Google listing or an ad. If your problem is answering inbound enquiries quickly, that happens on WhatsApp, not RCS, in most of the markets above.
What are the main feature differences?
| Feature | RCS for Business | WhatsApp (official API) |
|---|---|---|
| App needed | No; default messages app | Yes, WhatsApp |
| Verified sender | "Verified" badge for the brand | Business profile; green tick for some brands |
| Rich media and buttons | Yes | Yes |
| Fallback when unsupported | SMS, if your provider sends it | None; the customer must have WhatsApp |
| Business-initiated messages | Core use case | Template messages, charged by category |
| Customer-initiated conversations | Possible, less common | Very common: links, Google listings, click-to-WhatsApp ads |
| Pricing | Set by carriers and providers; varies by country | Meta's public rate card per country, plus provider fees |
| Coverage | Depends on carrier and, on iPhone, Apple's launches | Anywhere WhatsApp works |
Many larger businesses use both: RCS or SMS for alerts to every phone, WhatsApp for conversations. Enterprise platforms such as Gupshup sell both; our ReplyKit vs Gupshup page explains when that kind of platform makes sense.
Where does ReplyKit fit?
ReplyKit does not send RCS or SMS, and it does not send outbound campaigns. It is an AI agent that answers the WhatsApp and website conversations customers start: it replies from your own content, qualifies the lead, books an appointment into a real open slot, sends a reminder about 24 hours before, and hands over to you in one click.
So the honest split: if you are choosing a channel to send alerts in an SMS-first market, look at an RCS provider. If your customers already message you on WhatsApp and you need those messages answered in seconds, ReplyKit is built for that. It connects through Quick Connect, an unofficial QR pairing of your number, which is not the WhatsApp Business API, not sanctioned by Meta, and can lead to a restricted number; use a dedicated number. There are no Meta fees, plans are $29, $49 or $99 a month (see pricing), and you can start a 7-day free trial with 300 replies and no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between RCS and WhatsApp for business?
RCS for Business delivers branded, verified, rich messages into the phone's default texting app, with SMS fallback where RCS is not supported. WhatsApp requires the app but is the default way customers message businesses in much of the world. RCS is mainly business-initiated; WhatsApp is where many customers start conversations.
Does RCS business messaging work on iPhones?
On iPhones running iOS 18 or later, where Apple and the customer's carrier have enabled it. Google's documentation says Apple chooses the carriers for business RCS launches on iOS, so coverage varies by country and carrier. Other iPhones get the SMS fallback if your provider sends one.
Is RCS cheaper than WhatsApp?
It depends on the country and message type. In the US, Twilio lists RCS rich text at $0.0083 per segment plus carrier fees, while Meta's US WhatsApp utility rate is $0.0034, so a WhatsApp reminder is cheaper per message. But only about a third of US adults use WhatsApp, so RCS reaches more customers.
Who sets RCS business messaging prices?
Carriers and providers. Google's billing documentation defines the billable events, such as basic messages, single messages and 24-hour conversations, but does not publish prices. Providers such as Twilio and AWS publish their own rates, which vary by country.
Should my business use RCS or WhatsApp?
Use the channel your customers already use. In SMS-first markets like the US, RCS with SMS fallback is the natural upgrade for alerts. In WhatsApp-first markets such as Brazil, India, Spain, Malaysia or Nigeria, WhatsApp usually wins, especially for conversations customers start.
Did RCS replace Google Business Messages?
Not as a chat button on Google Business Profiles. Google ended Business Messages in July 2024, and its old documentation now redirects to RCS for Business, but RCS is a separate business messaging channel. Business Profiles now offer WhatsApp or text message chat instead.
Customers already message you on WhatsApp. Answer them in seconds.
