ManyChat vs Chatfuel: which chatbot builder costs less as your audience grows?
ManyChat and Chatfuel are the two names that come up first for Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp chatbots. In 2026 their pricing went in opposite directions: ManyChat charges by active contacts, Chatfuel sells one flat plan with unlimited contacts and a capped AI allowance. This guide shows what that means for your bill and which one fits your audience.
Quick answer
Chatfuel is cheaper for large audiences: its Business plan is US$18 a month billed yearly with unlimited active contacts and US$20 of AI credits a month. ManyChat suits Instagram-first creators and brands that want the deeper toolset: plans run $14 to $139 a month billed yearly, priced by active contacts, with AI from Pro. WhatsApp message fees are extra on both, paid from a wallet.
How are ManyChat and Chatfuel priced differently?
ManyChat charges for the number of active contacts you talk to each month, with five plans and per-contact overage. Chatfuel charges one flat price for its Business plan, with unlimited active contacts, and meters only AI usage through a monthly allowance.
That single difference decides most comparisons. A small audience with heavy automation is cheap on ManyChat's lower plans. A large audience with simple keyword replies and broadcasts is cheaper on Chatfuel, because its price does not rise with contacts. Both run WhatsApp on Meta's official platform, so Meta's per-message charges sit on top of either plan.
A note on how we checked: we read Chatfuel's pricing and plan limits pages on 25 October 2026. ManyChat's site put an automated browser check in front of its pricing page that day, so ManyChat figures are from our check of the same page on 17 October 2026, which is also the basis of our ManyChat pricing guide.

ManyChat's channels include Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS and email. Essential and Pro have a 14-day trial, and the free plan needs no card. Chatfuel says every plan starts with a free trial and no credit card, and lists integrations with Google Sheets, Zapier, Stripe and its API.
Why do active contacts matter so much?
On ManyChat, an active contact is someone your account interacts with in the billing month. A comment-to-DM campaign on a viral Instagram post can add thousands of active contacts in a week, and each one beyond your plan's allowance is billed.
That is the main way ManyChat bills grow unexpectedly. The overage rate falls on higher plans, from $0.10 a contact on Essential to $0.004 on Advanced, so the right move after a growth spike is often to upgrade rather than pay overage. Chatfuel's plan limits page says plans include unlimited active contacts and unlimited messages, so a viral month does not change the plan price; the AI allowance is what can run out.
How does AI work on each platform?
ManyChat includes ManyChat AI on Pro and above. Chatfuel includes a monthly AI credit allowance on every plan and pauses AI when it runs out.
- ManyChat AI helps build flows and handle conversations on Pro, Business and Advanced. On Free and Essential you build rule-based automations without it.
- Chatfuel AI covers its AI agent, follow-ups and co-pilot features. Static automations, such as keyword replies, button flows and broadcasts, are unlimited. AI processing has a fair-use allowance per billing period, shown as US$20 of AI credits a month on Business. According to Chatfuel's limits page, if you exceed it the bot pauses until the period resets, you renew, or you connect your own AI provider key.
What does WhatsApp cost on ManyChat and Chatfuel?
Both charge Meta's WhatsApp message fees separately from the plan, paid from a prepaid wallet. Neither plan price includes them.
- ManyChat bills WhatsApp messages through the ManyChat Wallet at per-country rates, on top of the plan.
- Chatfuel says Meta charges for WhatsApp messages separately; Chatfuel pays Meta for you and the fees come out of the same wallet as your plan's credits, so you get one bill. Chatfuel describes itself as an official Meta WhatsApp Business Solution Provider.
Meta's rules are the same underneath both: per-message pricing that varies by country and category, template messages outside the 24-hour window, and, since 1 October 2026, a charge for service replies after the first 1,000 a month per business number. Messages within a free entry point window, opened by a click-to-WhatsApp ad, are free for up to 7 days. The details are on Meta's pricing page and in our WhatsApp API pricing explainer.
What would you pay at 400 contacts and at 5,000?
Two hypothetical accounts, before WhatsApp message fees, which are the same Meta rates on either platform.
| Account | ManyChat | Chatfuel |
|---|---|---|
| A local salon: 400 active contacts a month on Instagram and WhatsApp, wants AI replies | Pro, because AI starts there: $39 monthly or $29 yearly (2,500 contacts included) | Business: about $20 monthly or $18 yearly |
| Same salon without AI | Essential: $17 + 150 extra contacts × $0.10 = $32 monthly | Business: about $20 monthly |
| An online brand: 5,000 active contacts a month, three channels, two staff | Pro plus overage: $29 + 2,500 × $0.038 = $124 yearly-billed, so Business at $69 yearly ($99 monthly) is cheaper | Business: $18 yearly, unlimited contacts |
| Same brand after a viral month, 15,000 contacts | Business: $69 + 7,500 × $0.018 = $204 yearly-billed, or Advanced at $139 | Still $18, watching the AI allowance |
On price alone Chatfuel wins once an audience grows. ManyChat's case rests on its toolset, especially Instagram growth tools, more channels and a large creator ecosystem, which many users judge worth the difference.
Should you choose ManyChat or Chatfuel?
Choose ManyChat if
Instagram is your main growth channel and you run comment-to-DM, story replies and giveaways. You want TikTok, Telegram, SMS or email in the same builder. You value a large library of templates and tutorials. Your audience is small enough that the contact allowance is comfortable.
Choose Chatfuel if
Your audience is large or spiky and you do not want the price to follow it. WhatsApp is central and you want an official provider with one combined wallet. You run several client businesses and want an agency tier. You can live with an AI allowance that pauses when used up.

What if WhatsApp, not Instagram, is your main channel?
ManyChat and Chatfuel are built around flows, broadcasts and growth tools across social channels. If your business mostly needs WhatsApp enquiries answered well, with bookings, rather than campaigns, a narrower tool may fit better.
ReplyKit, which we make, is that kind of tool. It answers WhatsApp and website chat from your own content, qualifies leads and books appointments into your open slots, for $29 to $99 a month with AI replies included and no Meta message fees (plans). It links to your number by QR code, which is unofficial and not sanctioned by Meta, so a number can be restricted; we cap reply rates and suggest a dedicated number. It replies only to people who message first, and has no broadcasts, Instagram, Messenger or Zapier. For campaigns and Instagram growth, ManyChat or Chatfuel is the better choice. Frequently asked questions
Is Chatfuel cheaper than ManyChat?
For anything beyond a small audience, yes. Chatfuel Business is US$18 a month billed yearly with unlimited active contacts, while ManyChat's plans run $14 to $139 a month billed yearly and charge for contacts above each plan's allowance. ManyChat can match Chatfuel only for very small accounts without AI.
Does ManyChat charge for WhatsApp messages?
Yes. ManyChat bills WhatsApp messages through its Wallet at per-country rates, on top of the plan price. Those charges reflect Meta's per-message pricing for the official WhatsApp platform.
Does Chatfuel include Meta's WhatsApp fees?
No. Meta charges for WhatsApp messages separately. Chatfuel pays Meta on your behalf and takes the fees from the same wallet as your plan's credits, so you see one bill.
What happens when Chatfuel's AI credits run out?
According to Chatfuel's plan limits page, AI processing pauses until the billing period resets or you renew, unless you connect your own AI provider key. Static automations such as keyword replies, button flows and broadcasts keep working.
Which is better for Instagram automation?
ManyChat is the more established choice for Instagram, with comment-to-DM, story replies and a large template library. Chatfuel also automates Instagram comments and Reels replies, so test both on your own account during the trials.
Can I move from ManyChat to Chatfuel?
Yes, but flows do not transfer automatically, so you rebuild them. On WhatsApp you also need to move or reconnect your number with the new provider. Plan the switch for a quiet week and keep both running briefly.
