Solo business, one phone, too many messages: is a WhatsApp AI agent worth it when it is just you?
When it is just you, every message competes with the work. The massage therapist cannot reply mid-treatment, the tutor cannot reply mid-lesson, the baker's hands are in the dough. The messages that arrive during work are the ones you lose. Whether an agent is worth it depends on one thing: how many of those there are.
Quick answer
It is worth it if you regularly miss or delay enquiries because you are working, if your customers ask the same questions, and if a single new customer is worth more than the monthly fee. It is not worth it if you get a handful of messages a week and enjoy answering them, or if your enquiries are mostly complex, personal conversations. Try it for a week on a dedicated number; the 7-day trial includes 300 replies.
When it pays
- You work with your hands or your full attention: therapy, tutoring, trades, cooking, driving, treatments.
- You have ever discovered an enquiry hours later and found the customer had gone elsewhere.
- Your last hundred messages are mostly the same fifteen questions.
- You take bookings and spend time on back-and-forth to find a slot.
- One new customer is worth more than $29. For almost every service business, it is.
When it does not
- You get a few messages a week and answering them is part of the relationship you enjoy.
- Your enquiries are long, personal and different every time, such as counselling or bespoke design consultations. The agent would hand most of them over.
- You do not have, and will not get, a second number. Automating your personal line is the one thing we tell everyone not to do.
- You will not spend twenty minutes writing down your prices and rules. The agent only knows what you write.
What actually changes
You stop being interrupted for the same questions. The agent answers prices, hours and availability while you work, books the next customer into the slots you set, and reminds them the day before. When someone needs you, the chat is flagged and you reply at the next break, with the customer having already been told a person would reply. Your day ends with a list of tomorrow's bookings instead of a scroll through unanswered chats. For a solo operator the agent is less a receptionist than a second phone that never needs to be picked up.
Trying it without risk
- Get a prepaid SIM for a spare phone, or an eSIM on your current one. Keep your personal number as it is.
- Write your prices and rules in twenty minutes; upload your Instagram or website if you have one.
- Set your services and the hours you accept bookings.
- Run the twenty-message test, then connect the number through Meta's sign-in.
- Put the new number on your Instagram bio and Google profile. After a week, count the bookings the agent made while you were working.
The trial is seven days with 300 replies and a card that is not charged if you cancel. If the count in step five is zero, cancel and you have lost twenty minutes. The cost comparison covers the maths for when it is more than zero.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI agent worth it for a solo business?
If you lose or delay enquiries while working and customers ask the same questions, usually yes. One new customer a month covers the fee.
Do I need a second phone?
A second number, at least: a prepaid SIM in a spare phone or an eSIM on a dual-SIM phone. Do not automate your personal line.
How much setup work is it?
About twenty minutes to write prices and rules, ten to set services and hours, and ten to test.
Will customers mind talking to an AI?
Most do not when it answers fast and honestly and hands over on request. The agent says it is an assistant by default.
What does it cost?
$29 a month on Starter, with a 7-day free trial that includes 300 replies.
Answer while your hands are busy
A second number, twenty minutes of setup, one week to see the bookings. 7-day free trial.
