Upselling and cross-selling on WhatsApp without annoying anyone: the moments that work, the wording, and the rules for an AI agent

The best upsell on WhatsApp sounds like help: "If you're doing the roots, most people add a treatment for RM 40 and it lasts longer." The worst sounds like a shop assistant following you around. The difference is relevance, timing and restraint, and all three can be written into an agent's rules.

Quick answer

Suggest one relevant extra at one of three moments: while the customer is choosing (a bundle or the better option), at confirmation (an add-on that makes the purchase work better), or after the service (the next step or maintenance). Never more than one suggestion per conversation, never in a complaint, never after a no. Keep a related-items list in the knowledge base so an AI agent suggests only from it, with the price, and takes no for an answer the first time. ReplyKit agents follow exactly these rules when you write them into the instructions.

The three moments

MomentWhat to suggestExample
While choosingA bundle or the better option, with the reason"The 10-session package works out RM 15 cheaper per session if you're planning monthly."
At confirmationAn add-on that improves the thing they bought"Want me to add the screen protector while the phone's open? RM 30, saves a second visit."
After the serviceMaintenance, the next step, or a refill"Your tint usually needs a top-up around month 2. Shall I pencil you in?"

Suggestions outside these moments, such as in a complaint, during a price question, or after the customer already declined, cost more than they earn. The haggling case is a different conversation, covered in handling haggling.

The rules

  1. One suggestion per conversation. If it is declined, that is the end.
  2. Relevant to what they bought or asked. A related-items list, not the whole catalogue.
  3. Price included. A suggestion without a price feels like a trap.
  4. A reason, in one clause. Saves a visit, lasts longer, cheaper per session.
  5. Never in a complaint, never to a hesitant customer, never after a no.

Scripts

Bundle

Just so you know, the {bundle} is {price} for all three, versus {price} separately. Want that instead? Either is fine.

Add-on at confirmation

Confirmed for {day} at {time}. One thing: most customers add {add-on} ({price}) at the same time because {reason}. Shall I include it?

Upgrade

The {standard} is {price}. If you want {benefit}, the {premium} is {price}. Both good; the premium mainly makes sense if {condition}.

After-service next step

Thanks for coming in today. {Service} is usually best refreshed in about {interval}. I can book you now or remind you nearer the time, whichever you prefer.

Taking no

No problem at all. {Original item} it is. See you {day}.

Instructing the AI agent

Add a related-items list to the knowledge base: for each product or service, one add-on or bundle with its price and the one-clause reason. Then add three lines to the instructions: suggest at most one related item per conversation, only from the list, only at confirmation or when the customer is choosing; include the price; if the customer declines or is unsure, drop it and do not raise it again; never suggest anything in a complaint. Test with the twenty-message test including a complaint and a hesitant buyer, and check the agent stays quiet in both. The structure is in writing the instructions.

Measure it

Average order value before and after, and the share of suggestions accepted. If acceptance is under one in ten, the list is wrong, not the customers. Fix the list, not the pressure.

Frequently asked questions

How many upsells per conversation?

One. If it is declined, drop it and do not raise it again in that conversation.

When is the best moment to upsell?

At confirmation, with an add-on that improves what they bought, or after the service with the next step.

Can an AI agent upsell?

Yes, from a related-items list you give it, with the price, once per conversation, never in a complaint. Write those rules into its instructions.

Should I offer a discount to close the upsell?

No. A relevant suggestion with a reason sells on its own; a discount teaches customers to wait for one.

What if customers find it pushy?

They will if there is more than one suggestion, if it is irrelevant, or if it lacks a price. Fix those three and the complaints stop.

How we know this. ReplyKit agents can be given a related-items list and a suggestion rule; the limits below come from customers who tried broader rules and found customers reacted badly. Product figures in this article (limits, prices, per-reply costs) are taken from ReplyKit as it runs today and are re-checked when we update the page.
