"Can discount?": how to handle price haggling on WhatsApp, with scripts that hold the price and keep the customer
"Can discount?" arrives after most quotes in this part of the world, and it is not an insult. It is a habit, and sometimes a test. Businesses that cave lose margin; businesses that bristle lose customers. The answer is a small set of prepared responses and a rule about who is allowed to give them.
Quick answer
Prepare four responses. Hold: restate the value and the price, politely and once. Trade: give something only in exchange for something (a larger order, a slower date, a deposit today, a referral). Reframe: offer a cheaper scope instead of a cheaper price. Walk: let the customer go graciously and leave the door open. Write your discount policy down so staff answer consistently, and never let an AI agent negotiate; it should hold the published price and hand over.
Why they ask
- Habit: in many markets not asking feels careless.
- A test: they want to know the price is real.
- A budget gap: they want it but cannot afford it as scoped.
- Comparison: someone else quoted less, for something not quite the same.
Which one it is decides the response, so ask before you answer: "May I ask what budget you had in mind?" or "Is the total the concern, or the timing?"
The four responses
Hold.
I understand. Our price is RM [amount], and it includes [the two or three things that matter]. It is the same for every customer, which is how we keep the quality consistent.
Trade.
I cannot reduce the price, but if you confirm today with the deposit, I can include [small add-on] at no charge.
If you take [larger quantity], the unit price comes down to RM [amount].
Reframe.
If the budget is around RM [amount], the [smaller package] fits it: [what it includes]. Would that work?
Walk.
No problem at all. If it helps to compare, our quote includes [x and y]; do check whether the other quote does too. We are here if you decide to go ahead.
Write the policy
One paragraph, in the knowledge base and in staff training: what is never discounted, what trades are allowed (deposit today, bulk, off-peak, referral), the maximum any staff member may give, and who approves more. Consistency is what makes "the same for every customer" true. The staff routine is in training staff.
When a discount is right
- Off-peak slots you would otherwise not sell.
- Bulk or repeat commitments that lower your cost.
- Clearing stock with a real end date.
- A goodwill gesture after a mistake, which is not a negotiation.
Each of these is a policy, not a reaction, so put it in the price list and let it be quoted openly.
Why the agent never negotiates
An AI agent that can be talked into a discount will be, by everyone, every time; word spreads in minutes. Instruct it to hold the published price, quote any published trade (bulk rates, off-peak) as policy, and hand over any discount request with a friendly "let me check with the team". The person then chooses one of the four responses. This is also a liability point: a promise made by the agent is made in your name, per our terms. The lead-up to this moment is in handling quotation requests.
