How to announce a promotion on WhatsApp without getting blocked: Status, opted-in lists, replies, and the blast that gets numbers restricted

You have a promotion and a phone full of customers. The temptation is to message all of them. That is how numbers get restricted, because customers report unsolicited promotions and WhatsApp acts on reports. There are four safe ways to announce, and one of them reaches more people than the blast would have.

Quick answer

Safe: post the promotion on Status, where every contact who has you saved can see it; reply with the promotion to anyone who messages you; message customers who explicitly opted in to promotions, individually, rarely, with an easy stop; and run a click-to-WhatsApp ad so interested people message you. Not safe: broadcast lists or bulk messages to contacts who did not opt in, especially from a number connected to ReplyKit. Unsolicited promotions are what customers report, and reports are what restricts numbers.

The four safe methods

  1. Status. A 24-hour post visible to contacts who have your number saved. Free, unlimited, zero risk, and a common way regulars follow small businesses here. Details in Status for business updates.
  2. Replies. Anyone who messages you during the promotion hears about it in the reply. An agent does this automatically from a knowledge base line.
  3. Opt-in list. Customers who said yes to promotions, messaged one at a time with a personal line, no more than monthly, with "reply STOP" honoured instantly. Consent rules are in consent and opt-out rules.
  4. Click-to-WhatsApp ads. Facebook and Instagram ads that open a chat with you; the people who message are interested by definition. See tracking leads from ads.

The blast

Broadcast lists reach only contacts who saved your number, and even then, a wave of identical promotional messages from one number is the pattern WhatsApp's systems and customers' report buttons are built to catch. From a number connected to ReplyKit the risk is higher. ReplyKit does not send campaigns at all; the agent replies to inbound messages within the caps described in the daily limits guide. If you want large-scale campaigns, the sanctioned route is the official API with templates and per-message fees, explained in API pricing explained.

This week only: 20% off all facials, Tuesday to Thursday. Message us to book. [photo]

Reply to an enquiry

Yes, we have slots on Thursday. This week facials are 20% off Tuesday to Thursday, so Thursday 3pm would be RM 120. Shall I book it?

Opt-in customer, individual

Hi Mei, you asked us to tell you about offers: facials are 20% off this week, Tuesday to Thursday. Want a slot? Reply STOP to skip future offers.

Measuring it

Count conversations that mention the promotion and bookings marked Won with the promotion as the reason. Status views tell you reach; replies tell you interest; Won tells you money. The record-keeping is in the WhatsApp CRM guide.
