WhatsApp Channels for business: how to create one, what it is good for, name ideas, and channels vs broadcast
A WhatsApp Channel lets you post updates to anyone who follows you, with no limit on followers and no spam risk to your chats. It also has one big catch for a business. This guide shows how to set one up, where it beats a broadcast list, and how to work around the catch. Steps were checked against WhatsApp's help centre in October 2026.
Quick answer
A WhatsApp Channel is a one-way feed in the Updates tab where a business posts text, photos, videos, links, audio and polls to unlimited followers. Followers cannot reply, only react or vote, and they do not see your phone number. To create one, tap Updates, the plus button, then Create channel. Use it for news; use chats for sales.
What is a WhatsApp Channel for a business?
A WhatsApp Channel is a public, one-way broadcast that lives in the Updates tab, separate from chats. You post; followers read, react with an emoji or vote in a poll. WhatsApp's help centre describes it as a one-way broadcast rather than a conversation: followers cannot reply to updates or message the admins through the channel.
For a business, three things make it different from anything else on WhatsApp:
- No follower limit. WhatsApp says you can share updates with an unlimited audience.
- Privacy both ways. Followers do not see your profile name, picture or phone number. Followers cannot see who else follows, though admins can see a follower's profile name next to their reactions or votes.
- Opt-in by design. People choose to follow, notifications are muted by default, and they can unfollow any time. You are not messaging anyone's chat list, so there is nothing to report as spam in their inbox.
Channels work in the WhatsApp Business app as well as regular WhatsApp. WhatsApp notes that channels and some features, such as creating a channel, are still rolling out and may not be available to every account.
WhatsApp Channels vs broadcast lists, business broadcasts, Status and groups
The short version: channels are for reach, broadcasts are for reaching your own customers' chats, and groups are for conversations.
| Channel | Broadcast list | Business broadcast | Status | Group | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who receives it | Anyone who follows | Your contacts who saved your number | Customers you select | Contacts who can see your status | Members |
| Where it lands | Updates tab | Their chat with you | Their chat with you | Updates tab, 24 hours | Group chat |
| Can they reply? | No, react or vote only | Yes, privately | Yes, privately | Yes, privately | Yes, to everyone |
| Cost | Free | Free | Paid per delivered message | Free | Free |
| Phone number shown? | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes, to members |
| Best for | Public news, drops, tips | Small loyal lists | Offers with a button | Daily specials | Classes, projects |
Broadcast lists only reach people who have your number saved, and WhatsApp warns that heavy use leads to reports and bans; see our guide to broadcast list limits. For Status, see using Status for business updates, and for groups, communities and groups for business.
How to create a WhatsApp Channel for your business
- Open Updates. On your phone, tap the Updates tab, then the plus button. On WhatsApp Web or desktop, click the Channels icon, then the plus.
- Tap Create channel, then Continue.
- Add a channel name. WhatsApp's guidelines ask for a title that reflects the channel's content.
- Add a description and icon. Both are optional but worth doing. You can change them later.
- Tap Create channel.
- Invite people. On a phone you can select contacts to invite with an optional message, or tap Skip and invite later.
Then set up the team. You can invite up to 16 admins, who can edit channel info and create, edit and delete updates. Only the owner can delete the channel. One privacy point WhatsApp flags: admin invitations are sent from your own WhatsApp account, so invited admins can see your phone number. WhatsApp also asks every admin to turn on two-step verification.
WhatsApp Channel name ideas for a business
Your name is how people find you in the channel directory, so make it say who you are and what they get. Three formulas that work, with hypothetical examples:
| Formula | Examples |
|---|---|
| Brand plus what they get | Bloom Bakery Daily Bakes · Kedai Ali Fresh Arrivals · Northside Gym Class Updates · Lumi Skin Drops |
| Brand plus place | Bloom Bakery Petaling Jaya · Casa Verde Lisbon · Green Fork Kitchen Austin · Harbour Dental Penang |
| Topic plus brand, for tips channels | Home Repair Tips by FixRight · Easy Malay Lessons by Cikgu Nur · Plant Care by Leaf and Co · Money Basics by Tan Accounting |
Avoid names that only make sense to you ("Team Updates"), words like "official" if you are not verified, and anything that could be mistaken for another business; WhatsApp's guidelines prohibit impersonation. Keep the icon the same as your WhatsApp Business profile photo so people trust it is you.
What should a business post on a WhatsApp Channel?
Channels support text, images, videos, stickers, links, audio and polls. WhatsApp's guidelines warn admins against sending too many or low-quality updates, which leads people to unfollow. A simple weekly rhythm for a small business:
- Monday: what is new this week (stock, menu, slots).
- Wednesday: one useful tip in a photo or 30-second video.
- Friday: a poll ("Which flavor next?") or an offer with a link to chat.
- As needed: closures, holiday hours, sold-out notices.
Three or four updates a week is enough for most local businesses. Every update that sells should end with a way to talk to you, because followers cannot reply in the channel (see below).
How do you get followers for a WhatsApp Channel?
WhatsApp lists three ways people find channels: a link you share outside WhatsApp, followers sharing your channel with their contacts, and browsing or searching the in-app directory. In practice:
- Share the channel link and QR code (from the channel info page) on your website, Instagram bio, receipts and counter.
- Post the link once in your WhatsApp Status and in replies to existing customers who ask about new stock.
- Forward the link to up to five chats at a time from the channel, to people who would genuinely want it.
- Ask followers to share. WhatsApp lets them forward your channel to their own contacts.
Paid options are arriving: WhatsApp is gradually rolling out promoted channels in the directory, ads in Status and Channels, and paid channel subscriptions. They may not be available in your country yet.
What insights does a WhatsApp Channel give you?
Channel insights show 30-day accounts reached, net follows, follows and unfollows, total followers and up to 10 top regions, plus emoji reactions, poll votes and views per update. WhatsApp attaches some conditions worth knowing before you judge results:
- Insights are not available for channels with fewer than 100 followers.
- Numbers may be delayed by about a week, and the feature is labeled in development.
- A region only appears in top regions after your channel reaches more than 100 local accounts in 30 days.
On verification, WhatsApp's create-channel page says channel verification is not publicly available yet, while its page on restricted accounts lists a verified channel as a benefit for some subscribers to Meta's paid plans. Check what your own account offers rather than paying for it on the strength of a badge alone.
How do you turn channel followers into customers?
Give them a door into a chat. Since followers cannot reply to a channel update, put a click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message in the updates that sell, for example https://wa.me/60XXXXXXXXX?text=I%20saw%20the%20Friday%20offer (use your full number in international format). Our guide to WhatsApp links and QR codes shows how.
Then make sure those chats get answered fast, because a popular update can bring 50 messages in an hour. We make ReplyKit, so weigh our view accordingly. ReplyKit does not post to channels or send broadcasts. It is an AI agent that answers the chats a channel update creates, from your own price list and FAQs, books appointments and captures leads, and hands any chat to you in one click. It connects through Quick Connect, a QR pairing that is unofficial, not the WhatsApp Business API, and a number can be restricted, so read will WhatsApp ban my number for automation? and use a dedicated number. If your channel is quiet, you do not need it. If it is working, try a 7-day free trial, no credit card, or compare plans from $29 a month.
Frequently asked questions
Is a WhatsApp Channel good for business?
Yes, for one-way updates such as new stock, offers, tips and closures to people who choose to follow. It is free, has no follower limit and hides your phone number. It is not for conversations, because followers cannot reply in the channel.
How do I create a WhatsApp Channel for my business?
Open the Updates tab, tap the plus button, then Create channel and Continue. Add a name, an optional description and icon, and tap Create channel. Creation is still rolling out, so update the app if you do not see it.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp Channel and a broadcast list?
A broadcast list sends a message into each contact's chat, reaches only people who saved your number, and lets them reply privately. A channel posts to the Updates tab for any number of followers, who can react but not reply.
Can followers see my phone number on a WhatsApp Channel?
No. WhatsApp says followers do not see the channel admin's profile name, picture or phone number. People you invite as admins can see your number, because the invitation comes from your own account.
Can I see who follows my WhatsApp Channel?
Admins can see a follower list with profile names and, depending on privacy settings, photos. Followers cannot see each other. Detailed insights appear only once the channel has at least 100 followers.
Do WhatsApp Channels cost money?
Creating and posting to a channel is free. WhatsApp is gradually rolling out paid options such as promoted channels in the directory and channel subscriptions, which may not be available in your country yet.
