WhatsApp Business on a virtual number, a landline or a second SIM: what registers, what gets banned, and the safe way to get a dedicated business number

You want a second WhatsApp number for the business without buying a second phone. The options are a landline, a virtual number from an online service, an eSIM, or a cheap prepaid SIM. Some of these work fine, some register and then get banned, and one of them is boring and reliable.

Quick answer

WhatsApp Business registers a number by SMS or voice call. A mobile SIM works. A landline can work through the voice-call verification, though it needs a phone to run the app. Virtual and VoIP numbers from online services often fail verification or register and are later banned, because WhatsApp associates them with abuse. Foreign numbers work but confuse local customers. For a dedicated business number for automation, a local prepaid SIM in a cheap Android phone, kept on Wi-Fi at the premises, is the safe choice.

WhatsApp's registration steps are in the Help Center; it does not publish a list of blocked number ranges, and virtual numbers' behaviour changes over time.

The landline option

During registration, choose "call me" instead of SMS and enter the landline; answer the call and type the code into the app on a phone. The number is then a WhatsApp Business number that customers recognise as your shop line, which some businesses like. The phone running the app still needs to exist and stay online, and if you later lose the landline you lose the account.

Why virtual numbers are risky

Online virtual number services are widely used for throwaway accounts, so WhatsApp treats those ranges with suspicion: registration often fails, and accounts that do register are restricted more often, especially if they then behave like a business sending many messages. For a number you will print on a shopfront and pair to an agent, that risk is not worth the saving. The general ban picture is in Meta's messaging limits explained.

The recommendation

  1. A local prepaid SIM from a mainstream carrier, registered in the business's or owner's name.
  2. A cheap Android phone that stays at the premises on Wi-Fi, with two-step verification on.
  3. WhatsApp Business installed, profile completed, greeting and away messages set.
  4. The agent connected to that number through Meta's sign-in.
  5. Personal WhatsApp stays on the personal phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a virtual number for WhatsApp Business?

Often not: many fail verification or are banned later. For a business number you will rely on, use a local SIM.

Can I use a landline for WhatsApp Business?

Usually, through voice-call verification. A phone still runs the app; the landline only receives the code.

Can one phone have two WhatsApp numbers?

Yes, with a dual-SIM or eSIM phone and the WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps, or WhatsApp's multi-account feature where available.

Do I need a second phone for a business number?

A cheap Android kept at the premises is the reliable setup for automation; a second SIM in one phone also works.

What about a foreign number?

It works, but local customers may hesitate to message it.
