Getting Google reviews through WhatsApp: the ask that works, the timing, and the rules you must not break

Google reviews decide which clinic, salon or workshop gets the call, and the businesses with the most reviews are not the best ones, they are the ones that ask. WhatsApp is the easiest place to ask, because the customer is already in a conversation with you. Here is the ask, the timing, and the two rules that get businesses penalised.

Quick answer

After a completed visit, send the customer a short message with the direct link to your Google review form, framed as a favour, with no reward offered and sent to every customer, not just the happy ones. The best moment is within a day of the visit, in the same WhatsApp thread. An AI agent can include the link when a customer replies after their appointment; sending it unprompted is a business-initiated message you should do by hand or with consent.

The two rules that get you penalised

Both are tempting and both are enforced. The upside of following them is that honest reviews read as honest.

In Google Business Profile, open your profile, find "Ask for reviews" or the share button, and copy the short link. It opens the review form directly with the five stars, which removes the biggest source of drop-off: searching for your business first. Keep that link in your knowledge base so the agent and the team always use the same one.

The ask that works

Hi Aisha, thanks for coming in today. If you have a minute, a short Google review helps other people find us: [link]. Thank you either way.

Name, thanks, the favour framed as helping others, the link, and permission to ignore it. No stars mentioned, no "5-star", no reward. Send it within a day of the visit while the experience is fresh, in the same thread as the booking so it feels like a continuation, not a campaign.

Where the AI agent fits

There is a line here. A message you send after a visit, unprompted, is business-initiated; on a number connected to ReplyKit ReplyKit does not send those automatically, which keeps you inside WhatsApp's expectations. What the agent can do: when a customer messages after their appointment ("thanks, that was great" or a follow-up question), the agent replies and includes the review ask, if you put the link and the wording in its instructions. For everyone else, the team sends the message from the inbox, which takes ten seconds and is easy to make a daily habit: the leads list shows who came in today.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for Google reviews on WhatsApp?

Yes. Ask every customer the same way, with the direct review link, and offer nothing in return.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

No. Incentivised reviews violate Google's policies and can get reviews removed or the profile penalised.

Should I only ask happy customers?

No. Selectively asking is review gating and is also against Google's policies. Ask everyone.

Can the AI agent send review requests?

It can include the link when a customer messages after a visit. Unprompted requests are sent by the team from the inbox.

When is the best time to ask?

Within a day of the visit, in the same WhatsApp thread as the booking.

How we know this. ReplyKit customers ask us how to fold review requests into the conversation, and the method here is the one that stays inside Google's review policies: ask everyone, no rewards, no filtering. Product figures in this article (limits, prices, per-reply costs) are taken from ReplyKit as it runs today and are re-checked when we update the page.
