Adding an AI chat assistant to your website on Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or WordPress: where the snippet goes on each platform, what to put in its knowledge, and how to test it
The assistant is one line of code. The only hard part is finding where your website platform lets you paste it, because every platform hides that setting somewhere different. Here is the exact path for each, current as of writing.
Quick answer
Create a website assistant in your dashboard, copy its snippet, and paste it just before the closing body tag of your site: on Shopify in the theme's layout file, on Wix in Settings under Custom code, on Squarespace in Code Injection, and on WordPress with a header-and-footer plugin or your theme's footer scripts box. Give the assistant your site's knowledge (it can crawl the site itself) and a short instruction set, test it on a product page, and watch the chats arrive in the same inbox as WhatsApp. ReplyKit's assistant is included on every plan.
Shopify
- Online Store, Themes, the three-dot menu on your live theme, Edit code.
- Open Layout, theme.liquid.
- Find the closing body tag near the bottom and paste the snippet on the line above it.
- Save. The assistant appears on every page.
- If your theme updates often, re-check after updates; some themes reset edits.
Wix
- Site dashboard, Settings, Custom code (under Advanced).
- Add custom code, paste the snippet, name it.
- Add to: All pages. Place code in: Body, end.
- Apply. Custom code requires a paid Wix plan with a connected domain.
Squarespace
- Settings, Developer tools, Code injection (older versions: Settings, Advanced, Code injection).
- Paste the snippet in the Footer box.
- Save. Code injection needs a Business plan or above.
WordPress
- Easiest: install a header-and-footer scripts plugin, paste the snippet in the footer box, save.
- Or: Appearance, Theme file editor, footer.php, before the closing body tag; this is overwritten on theme updates unless you use a child theme.
- Many themes have a "footer scripts" box in their own settings; use it if present.
- For WooCommerce stores the assistant works on product pages like any other page.
Webflow: Project settings, Custom code, Footer code. Plain HTML: paste before the closing body tag in your template. The widget loads asynchronously and does not slow the page.
What the assistant should know
Let it crawl your site, then add what the site does not say: shipping and returns in plain lines, sizing, stock notes, hours, and the questions people ask before buying. The assistant has its own instructions and knowledge separate from your WhatsApp agent, so a storefront persona can differ from the WhatsApp one; see instructions for a website assistant. Test on a product page with the five questions customers ask most, as in AI chat widget for websites. Chats land in the same inbox and CRM as WhatsApp, and visitors can be moved to WhatsApp by giving them your number.
